Deferring admission

Hey guys, I’ve got a tricky situation.

So, I was granted admission to Northwestern University. The academics are spectacular, but it’s a must for me to continue to play baseball. I was injured my junior year, and therefore I missed the recruiting period for D1 schools. Northwestern does not allow for any walk on baseball players.

I want to defer admission to next year, and essentially use NU as my safety school. I’m going to try and get recruited to an Ivy League institution (they’re D1, but not as competitive athletically speaking).

My question is this: can I defer my acceptance to next year, and then decide to go elsewhere without any legal consequences? Or am I legally bound if I defer admission?

You are morally bound if not legally bound and if NU discovers you have applied elsewhere, they are likely to rescind your acceptance and perhaps also notify the college to which you applied of your dishonorable actions.

Thanks for the insight. I didn’t initially see it as a moral issue, but now I do. It’s wrong to do this, and for that reason, I won’t.
