Defferals

This really surprised us. My manager’s son got deferred because he had a B on his hs transcript. What shocks me is that at the informaton session we were told that C’s would get a second look but A’s and B’s were fine. I could understand if he had 1/2 of each but one B in an AP class becomes an A with weigh. And even if it did not get weigh, a B in a college level course is fine. What do the rest of you think. It is not like he can go back and fix the B.

I’m surprised he was given such a specific reason for the deferral. The people we know who’ve been deferred and who have asked admissions why have been given more general reasons, such as courseload was not rigorous enough. I have also heard of people getting different answers from different people in admissions when they’ve called, so I wonder if the person who told your manager’s son that the one B was the reason was fully informed.

I have a hard time believing that the reason for deferral was a single “B” on the transcript. There is some other deficiency that the Adcoms determined was enough to wait to see what the RD pool looks like.

yeah how does he know he got deferred for that reason? could he be using such a statement as a reprieve of some sort? I am sure a single B is not the cause of a deferral at any rate.

No one knows why he was deferred except for the admissions officers.

It wasn’t because of one B. If that were the case, I’d be an autoreject.

yep same here…an auto auto reject

even out of state accepted kids earned Bs in some AP classes. i know that for sure.
and i know that getting deferred can prompt a parent to feel so bad for his or her kid that her view can be slightly skewed. (by some, i mean ME!).
was he in state?
curious.

I’ve had Cs and Bs but mostly As in my courses. I got my acceptance letter last week. Your friend is lying. This is not the sole reason why he/she didn’t get into UNC

I got in OOS with 6 B’s…

Yeah, I got in OOS with (I think) 13 B’s. Then again, I go to the #3 school in the country.

wow, 13 B’s??? I mean, your school is obviously competitive, but still, that sounds like a lot. did you have great ACTs/SATs?

I think so. I got a 35 on the ACT, 2280 SAT. Great teacher recs. Plus, I took the hardest schedule anyone has taken for several years at my school.

I got in OOS with a B+ average(B+ frosh, B soph year an an A- junior year) 31 ACT. But it was the intangibles, extra curriculars and essays that got me in. I also went to like the 15th best school in the country, one which sends 1/4 to ivy leagues each year. I dont think one B=deferral

of course 1 B doesn’t equal deferral, but obviously UNC doesn’t consider grades the most then
