:)

dear lsa your link is stupid

The link isn’t stupid, it’s insightful.

I’m curious to know why you’re so bitter ctagz1010, it’s not like you’re the one who got deferred.

I enjoyed the link, too. Thanks LSA!

ctagz, MIT deferred a lot of students just like your friend; the majority of the students who apply to MIT are just like your friend. They can’t take them all. They look at subjective factors as well as objective ones. You and your friend should read some of these articles which might help you understand MIT’s deferral decision.

There are others, just google “Marilee Jones” MIT

wow, ctagz… calm down. i’m sorry your friend got deferred, but if he’s a genius then i’m sure MIT will admit him in the second round.

“So I hope yall realize that if someone like this gets defferred you guys are all majorly screwed”

Oh. I must be screwed then.

My schools val got a 1540. Hes taken every AP class also, and even got straight 100’s in every class one semester, had wonderful recs and ecs (but fairly one dimensional) however, he also got deferred from MIT.

MIT doesnt accept many EA. dont fret.

I know this may sound lame, but MIT obviously found people who “fit” it better. I, personally, was deferred myself and a friend who has lower stats than me was accepted. I could be ranting and complaining, but I think she was more “well-rounded” and possibly more “mit-material.” Heck, there’s always RD.

But in all seriousness. I’m sorry you (or your friend) were/was deferred. But, the admissions officers obviously did not close their eyes and count on the luck of the draw to build the Class of 2009, so there’s a definitely reason for every decision they make.

I’m not sure about you guys, but at least at my school, defer/admit is very common. Two years ago, all of our “Ivy/MIT/Stanford” candidates got deffered, and then half of them got admitted in April. It was really exciting. They told me that in the case of defferal, it’s critical to communicate to the college in question that it is still your first choice. Make sure you send grades, and if there was that one extra something that you didn’t send with your app b/c you thought it was “insignificant,” now is the time to make sure it gets in. I’ve even see kids send tapes of their singing, extra essays, et cetera.

To the original thread-starting comment :
You’re not going to impress people on the MIT board by referencing SAT scores and grade point averages. And at the very least, learn to spell “genius.”

not to mention the word “deferred” - which, i might add, is spelled for you several times in the forum already.

This is not surprising. A friend of mine is purely a genius. He scored a 1560 on the SAT’s, and took 3 SAT IIs, scoring above 750 in all of them (800 on MathIIc, of course). He has exhausted our High School’s math curriculum, thus he takes night courses at Harvard (I’m from MA). He is currently taking Sophomore level College Mathematics. He has good leadership, good EC’s, etc… Fantastic reccs and I would assume equally great essays. He’s going to be valedictorian of his class … by a lot — his unweighted avg is a 96%. The whole school was in a state of shock after we found out. Anyway, I’m just saying - MIT is ridiculous… you have to be crazy to get in there. Truly, I don’t know what else they could want.

Again, simply being a genius won’t get you admitted. MIT has plenty of those already. :)

Read the blog link I posted earlier in this thread for more on what I’m talking about. (Go back about two or three entries in the blog)

i think the word “genius” is too often abused … :(

agreed!

i’d rephrase, but i think you get where i was going with that post :D

REEEEEEALLY consider rephrasing. Seriously guys, a 96% average and a gasp 1560 on your SAT does not make you a genius by any stretch of the imagination. I almost laughed to myself when bluestate thought that getting a 1560 and an 800 or two was so amazing. All you have to do is wander the CC boards for an hour or two and you’ll realize there are probably 500 kids on these boards alone with stats meeting or exceeding those. Are they all geniuses? Not even close. There is no doubt in my mind that there are plenty of geniuses at MIT, but my guess is they probably only constitute 5% or so of the student population. MIT is just a bunch of kids who are smarter than average. I visited last thanksgiving and I was surprised at how slow the students actually were. I was sitting in a calc III class (i was taking BC at the time) and i solved most of the problems faster than anyone in the room. And trust me, I’m nothing special in math, i hover around top 25 in IL for math team. There is a huge difference between being a genius and having above-average intelligence, and i guarantee you that MIT does not defer GENIUSES, just those who don’t quite stack up to the admitted pool.

You know what, I used to spell “genius” wrong too.
