Do they literally mean first year? Like if I am a transfer student and it is my first year to the school would I only qualify for first year housing even if I may be a sophmore or junior? Or by first year do they simply mean freshman and not literally first year students?

First year = Freshman

As a transfer, when you sign up for housing and put down your deposit, the school will send you the dorms still available for transfer and you will make a list (in order of what you want) online. All upperclassman dorms (Sophomore +) are apartment styled.

So transfers basically get the leftover dorms correct?
But are only placed with the upperclassmen I am assuming unless housing got really tight?

Transfer students are still applying for housing at this time while upperclassmen at NYU have already gotten their time slots to sign up online for academic year 2011-2012 housing. In fact, all current NYU students should have gotten their housing assignments for next year. So, yes, as a transfer student, you do get whatever “is left over.”

I read last year that one transfer student was put into a dorm suite with either NYU freshmen or students from another year at NYU. The person was not very happy about that. So, again, yes, it appears that transfer students could be placed in housing with NYU students who are not in the same year as the transfer student if the housing inventory is tight.

So are you not allowed to sign up until after everyone else or something?
I am not a student for this year, I am just a curious prospective transfer student who will probably be at NYU within the next couple of years.

Thanks for all your answers!

NYU upperclassmen start signing up for the next academic year’s housing in March and they find out by April about new housing assignments. Transfer applicants start hearing about acceptances around end of April to May, so they cannot apply for housing until after current NYU students get assigned. It is a timing matter and based on a schedule determined by NYU, giving preference to students already enrolled at NYU before transfer students are even notified of their admission decisions.
