Demonization of Hippies

Why are hippies demonized and subject to hatred?

I was unaware they were.

Do hippies even exist anymore? Certainly there are wannabe-hippies, but genuine hippies were of the 60’s variety, so I think they are a dying breed.

Recreational Drugs, Postmodernism, Psychedelic Designs, widemouthedskinnypants, Austin Powers, Happy Songs, Cults, Peace, Animal Rights, Spiritualism, Liberalism, Environmentalism, Pubescent Rebellion, Orgies and Anarchy are all associated with the word “Hippy”. What is a “Hippy” to you?

The Animal Rights part is what strikes me as outrageous.

All those things you mentioned strike me as pretty terrific. Still not seeing why all the hate.

Stop drinking so much hatorade.

I don’t demonize hippies, and I encourage them, because many of them are Happies. I thought some of the things I mentioned were contradictory, for example, Peace and Rebellion - and then I singled out Animal Rights. I’m not on hatorade. We should embrace the Ecstatic Hugging and rejoice in the Republic of Heaven. Without Animal Rights. Excess Animals should be placed in widemouthedskinnypants and forced to engage in Orgies under overdoses of Prescription Drugs so they will make us laugh like Austin Powers.

My uncle used to be a hardcore hippy. Hardcore in that he joined an anarchist group during a military regime. But it was for peaceful anarchy.

Now he’s just… middle-aged lol.

Hippies were always an outside group and outside groups don’t write the textbooks.

So few of this generation were taught anything other than Hippies = dirty, disrespectful, sex and drugs.

I’m quite sure that Abbie Hoffman Is a true American hero. But most older people and members of the military in the 60’s and 70’s were told that anti war was anti American. He certainly was not right about everything (including drugs) but much of what he was prosecuted for amounted to standing up and telling the truth.

Two interesting facts - He had a daughter that he named “America”
When he was in hiding he used the name “William Barry Freed” (Will B Freed).

Not all Hippies are hero’s or even reasonably nice people but some were…

They were from a time when social norms were discarded, and they took a very active part in that. Illegal drugs, homelessness, teenage single parents, no job prospects, no support structure (except those in similar situations), protesting what was considered “normal,” etc. It’s not surprising that large portions of society rejected hippie culture. If you look at the effects of the “summer of love,” they were pretty bad for all involved (increase in crime, death, homelessness, drug addictions, etc). Much of “Hippie culture” is unproductive/destructive to those involved.

Then, there were the anti-soldier protests. Very few people nowadays think spitting on soldiers is an acceptable way to make one’s opinion known(especially when draftees had no choice in the matter).

Now, some who are labeled hippies have stated things like “there would be less violence if the police didn’t carry weapons.” So, the label (whether applied correctly or not) is being used to group people who go against society’s norms AND say some incredibly stupid things.

And yet all of that was still better than the alternative culutre.

I think spitting on murderers is perfectly acceptable. And what do you mean draftees didn’t have a choice? What does that mean? There is always a choice.

Go to this thread, there’s such a discussion in progress.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-confidential-cafe/716339-troops.html

Hippies are hated because the modern ones are wannabees who have no idea what they are talking about and are just eager for attention. They don’t care about their own morals, they just prefer to go against whatever the mainstream is supporting, even if it is correct.

And iamsounsure, our troops are not “muderers”. Get out of your basement a little and learn some things before your ignorance and hatred gets the best of you.

Iamsounsure,
Do some research on the Law of Armed Conflict and the UCMJ. You will find that murderers in the military are prosecuted as such (and often face harsher punishments for murder than some civilians).

Military personnel are (with a couple exceptions in a population of several million) NOT murderers. To blatantly stereotype them as such does a diservice to both parties (one being mislabeled, the other making a fool of themselves).

raimius, I wouldn’t get too into it with Iamsounsure. He/she believes that American soldiers today are tcomparable to the Nazis of WWII, and that they should all be incarcerated. Hard to reason with someone like that.
