Demonstrated interest?

I already visited the school last year and I was planning on attending a class but it’s not very convenient for me at the moment. I was thinking that I could attend a class perhaps (assuming) after I was admitted. Does NYU track student’s demonstrated interest in these types of things?

Yes, somewhat. You already visited campus. This is generally the norm for showing interest. Are you applying ED?

No. I’d ready to make the commitment. However I have been communicating with the admissions rep quite frequently.

Ok, ED+campus visit and email is super interest, you will have that part solid…ED itself is full interest. Still, without ED, you’ve done enough for them to cross out that part of your app, no worries there.

Actually, the application process at NYU doesn’t take into account interest. The common data set from 2008-2009 shows that the “Level of applicant’s interest” is not considered. As shown: [NYU > Office of Institutional Research and Program Evaluation > About Us](http://www.nyu.edu/cgi-bin/cgiwrap/cmd276/fact.book.data/submit_factbook2.pl?view=3&year=20083&cdspage=a&cdspage=b&cdspage=c&cdspage=d&cdspage=e&cdspage=f&cdspage=g&cdspage=h&cdspage=i&cdspage=j&cdspage=k)

Thanks for the source azhong. Has the data set for 2011 been updated though?

Also I’m curious by their regarding “Extracurriculars” as very important, but Work Experience and Volunteer Work as only “Considered”. Technically speaking, aren’t these all categorized under a similar label?

Why would any school consider interest? Especially a top dream school like NYU? Of course the applicants are interested.

And I wouldn’t ask to attend a class. If they even bother to set you up with one, it will most likely be a huge 300 student intro lecture and those are a waste of time. (Both as a student and as a visitor.) Don’t inconvenience yourself to commute into the city to sit in on a class. The only entertaining classes are the small, upper level 15 student seminars. And they definitely won’t let you sit in one of those.

Sorry askjeeves, but the data set for 2010-2011 hasn’t been released yet. Perhaps at the end of this year. In addition, I think Extracurriculars are essentially clubs in school. Work Experience can range from interning at Blackrock to manning the fryer at McDonalds, just as Volunteer work can range from volunteering in the NY Presbyterian Hospital to watching children. It all depends. But if that extracurricular or that volunteering stands out, excellent.
