Denied

okay so after first being deferred EA i got denied! i’m really confused as to why considering it was a safety/target school… like they could have at least waitlisted me since i was certainly qualified. i never sent in my midyear report though, could that have caused it?

for undeclared business major

what were your stats? I had a 26 ACT and a 3.7 w gpa, and got accepted after being waitlisted. but i sent in my mid year report, im from ohio, and im asian? so idk

SATS 650 math 610 reading and 630 writing
GPA- 3.8 (above the average accepted from my HS)
plenty of community service and jobs

thats surprising. your stats are good. not sending your mid year report may have caused it

nickkim - What program/major did you apply under?

i applied as an undecided student. maybe thats why I got in

I thought that applying as an undeclared major was harder.

If it makes you feel any better I was rejected too. Not sure what my GPA is but pretty sure its well below the standard. 85 average at a top HS in NYC.
1970 super score 790 math 580 reading 600 writing
690 Physics (slept during test :frowning: )
720 US history
4 on AP Physics 3 on AP US
Little EC
This year jumped from Trig right into BC Cal and have a 1-9 no lunch with 3 APs and PLTW classes
Large upward trend with my averages
I posted my stats so I feel better with my rejection (and lackluster stats)
I applied Engineering so thats probably why I got denied

I wouldn’t be surprised if the mid-year report was the clincher- I seem to remember that they require that, though it has been over a year since I applied.

Another thought might be that you were underestimating Northeastern a bit. Your stats were pretty good, but they don’t really strike me as being quite at the safety level. Over the last several years, the average scores of accepted students have increased significantly, and the number of applicants has also increased- this year Northeastern received the most applications out of any private university in the country. Complicating that even further is a recent decision to cap the size of the undergraduate class as part of a deal with the city of Boston.

My understanding was that five years ago Northeastern was widely regarded as a safety school, but increasingly, students are considering it their first choice. Of course, this is dependent on an individual’s academic situation, but I feel that for the majority of students, labeling Northeastern as it is today a safety school is rather presumptuous.

I got accepted with…

3.7

32/130

1940 (610M, 620, 710)

I don’t know if you guys heard of Tufts Syndrome.

Basically this is when a school rejects top applicants because it realizes top applicants are unlikely to enroll as they might be using it as a safety school. Based on the stats of other persons who were denied it seems that this could be a factor.

Tufts Syndrome is often invoked as a rationale for not being admitted. As WiseGuy57 said above, some denied/waitlisted applicants thought NU was a safety school. Maybe that came across in the application. The OP, chaymck, did not even bother sending in his midyear report, which the website says is required. If he had been serious about NU, he would not have missed that critical requirement.

I don’t know if I believe this Tufts Syndrome thing. Maybe if it’s really, really obvious. Cuz I applied to Northeastern as a safety, and because they waived my app. I didn’t even send in the CSS and FASFA for financial aid because I’m that positive I’m not going. Not only did I get accepted, but I also got the Dean’s Scholarship. My SAT scores are 2230. (R-800/M-710/W-720)
All I’m saying is I don’t want to go there, and they (admissions people) couldn’t tell, apparently.

"i never sent in my midyear report though, could that have caused it? " - That would be my guess. Without the midyear report, how would they know that you still cared?

Yeah, I’d think with the higher stats and no midyear report they assumed you just didn’t care.

3.75 and 1940 and waitlisted. Sent in mid-year grades (which were High Honors).

I have a friend who last year was accepted to UC Berkeley and waitlisted or rejected from other UCs. Someone told her it was Tufts Syndrome.

chaymck-- My D had similar stats to you and was denied after being deferred EA as well. Her mid-years were sent in. She was undeclared which I now think was a detriment. Although it may be that your not sending in your mid-year grades was the tipping point, I think likely there were just too many applications coming in this year and a lot of applicants with higher scores/GPAs nabbed the spots. She’s waiting on 1 more school though and is in at 4 other schools that she likes, so she’ll be happy wherever she lands in any event. I hope you’re in at least one other school you like and I wish you good luck!

if it makes you feel any better i had around the same stats as you (3.83 gpa, 2030 SATs, buncha ECs, athletics, jobs, etc.) and also did not get in (waitlisted). I also applied business though. A couple of my friends, who all have worse stats than me, all got in so I was pretty confused. Especially since I got a fee waiver which I figured meant they were interested in me. I don’t know if it’s the Tufts Syndrome, the heavy emphasis on EA admissions (i applied RD), or the fact that I applied business that killed it for me, but I thought I was gonna get in.
Oh well, they’re too expensive anyway. And their business school’s on the decline according to the 2011 Businessweek rankings :P

I didn’t necessarily consider the school a safety, but when I was denied by my original first choice school early action, I made a list of five institutions that I wouldn’t mind attending. I sifted through my piles of brochures and Northeastern’s happened to be towards the top, so I scoured the website for a bit and then decided to apply.

Northeastern was kind of in the back of my mind, so it figures that the school that I’m least considering is the one that gets back to me first, offers me a scholarship, and lets me into the honors program. Because of this early offer of admission, however, Northeastern has since become my first choice. I’ve visited and fallen in love.

Not really sure what this has to do with this thread, I just wanted to let people know that I can understand why it would be considered a safety, but I think it’s still a notable school and can no longer be looked at that way :)
