Denied?

I normally hate to post stats because others usually do it with conceit/trollishly, but I was denied from Georgia Tech Saturday, not even wait listed. I apologize if anyone takes my post this way. I was just looking for some opinions of fellow aspiring GTers.

This slue of activities drives me insane often. My grades have dipped at points because of my personal situation combined with a stressful schedule, which I wrote about where requested. I thought my essay about personal risk was alright.

I received this decision on my phone while at work. I hold a job at Wendy’s and close the store Fridays and Saturdays, and work mid-shifts Sundays. My personal risk essay involved Wendy’s.

I also applied the United States Air Force Academy and received a nomination from Scott Garrett. I got GT’s denial the same day I received a letter from him asking me to attend the honorary ceremony for nominees. I’m not expecting to get the same results out of every college at all, I was just confused and wanted input.

Thank you.

Well. I got waitlisted and my Reading score is 590 so that can’t be it. What was your major? If it was engineering, it’s usually very competitive.

Aerospace Engineering was my selected major. Although they say majors are not considered for admissions.

Yes, major is not considered for admissions, neither is in-state/out-of-state status. And I also got waitlisted with a CR of 590. My unweighted GPA up to 7th semester was 3.6 (my GPA was recalculated by admissions, not sure by how much) and I have nowhere as much ECs as you.

From what you said, maybe your cumulative GPA could be why? And if possible, you should ask the office of admissions whether the decision can be appealed.

My weighted GPA was 4.2 and I definitely don’t have as many EC’s as you. I have a few but not as many as you. I heard that ECs doesn’t really matter as much to Tech?

Georgia Tech wrote in one line on their web site that any concerns about individual admissions decisions should be sent to the Director/Vice Provost which I did (I e-mailed undergraduate admissions and wrote ATTN:) as soon as I got home Saturday/Sunday Morning (At 3-4 AM <_<)

I wrote this:

</resume>

I’m not trying to be arrogant and say I was a shoe in but I was expecting to be wait listed at least, maybe because my application was completed a little later in the extended period. Seeing stats about GT overall would lead me to this situation but I’ll have to see how admissions responds…

@ raptortom How strong was your math curriculim in high school? If you had a lot of AP math and science courses and performed well in them than I am honestly shocked that you got straight up denied. Also is the gpa u listed weighted or unweighted?(this may hav had an effect) im assuming that the main cause of your predicament is possibly the lack of a strong math/science curriculum.(idk though because u didnt list which math and science clases you took in your original post) Also, to your knowledge, did you make a mistake on the app or give any indication that gt is not your top choice and wld not go there if accepted elsewhere?

Raptortom, what is your GT calculated GPA? Also, is strength of schedule a concern?

My son was denied admission to GS, even though he was considered for a GT alumni scholarship, and made it to the interview round.

GPA 3.9
GPA 4.24 weighted
SAT, 2000: Reading, 660; Math, 720; Writing, 620
SAT Subject Tests: Math 2, 790; Physics, 700

5s on AP English and Calculus A/B/C
4 on AP Environmental Science

This year,
taking AP Physics & taking two AP Physics tests
taking AP Statistics
taking AP Psychology

Lots of Extracurriculars, including 11 years of Boy Scouts (Senior Patrol Leader, Life Rank, Order of the Arrow), 4 years of Marching Band, 3 years of Science Olympiad, and five years of Odyssey of the Mind.

Do you ever say what your entire h/s gpa is? You said your 7th semester, but they don’t look at the individual semesters nearly as much as the whole GPA.

I took that to mean the GPA at the end of the 7th semester (so the GPA including first semester senior year).

Hmm… interesting… I got accepted (into Electrical Engineering) though my SAT was lower than yours (superscore of 2100 – Math 730, Critical Reading 630, and Writing 740). And I had NO leadership roles (well, except maybe being a camp counselor). I think what got me in was my essays and/or my GPA of 4.4 weighted (3.8 unweighted).

Maybe it was something to do with your essays or something else you didn’t mention? Or maybe it had something to do with certain individual grades? (Like did you get anything lower than the B range?)

I’m pretty sure that it’s not possible to have a 3.8/4.4 GPA on a Georgia Tech application…

The 4.4 weighted was probably his high school’s weighting system, not GT’s. A GT weighting system can, at most, have a 0.5 difference between weighted and unweighted, and that would require literally every class taken in high school to be AP, IB, or dual enrollment with a local college.

Thanks CFB, that’s what I was thinking.

@dejacree Well, I didn’t actually list my unweighted GPA on my Georgia Tech app. I just listed my weighted GPA.

You should have listed your unweighted grades. When you send your transcript to GT, and your unweighted grades doesn’t match the GPA you gave them, there’s a good chance you’ll have your admission rescinded.

@CFB53B First of all, on my application, when I listed my GPA as my 4.4 weighted GPA, the application explicitly asked “Is this a weighted GPA?” with the options “Yes” and “No”. I checked the “Yes” option.

Second of all, my school transcript includes BOTH my unweighted and weighted GPA, so if they admissions office somehow missed the fact that I listed my weighted GPA on my app, they would be able to tell that the GPA is my weighted one from my transcript.

Third, on the app, it asks for ALL my grades that I have received so far in school, which can be verified in my school transcript.

@CFB53B I’m assuming you were a past applicant rather than an applicant for this year, and that previous Georgia Tech applicants were different in format than what I described above…

The GPA is fine, but they did ask for unweighted individual grades, so hopefully you reported that correctly. Once they have that, they use their own weighting scale to adjust your GPA (+0.5 for AP, IB, and dual enrollment).
