Denied

Just thought I’d post my stats for anyone that wants to compare, I applied early decision for the School of Arts and Sciences, and got denied, not deferred.

Unweighted GPA: 3.823

SAT Math: 750
SAT Reading: 700
SAT Writing: 670

SAT Subject Test, U.S History: 710

AP’s taken/taking:

Extra Curricular

Internship with the South Florida chapter of the Democratic National Committee: 11,12
School advisory Council: 11,12
NHS: 12
Satellite Internship with Barack Obama Campaign, March 2008-November 2008

Had an interview as well, and everything seem to have went perfect.

That’s a shame.

Do you have any particular theories on why you were denied? You seem like a great candidate.

Must’ve been some harsh competition this year?

I got rejected from Columbia ED. It sucked, especially because everyone kept on telling me that I “should have gotten in.” Don’t worry about it. You’ll end up where you belong.

It depends a lot on the high school you attended: the quality of it, etc.

They also look beyond the numbers at things like values, character, and likeliness to contribute to society or whatever you want to call it.

They don’t need any more kids with 3.8 GPA’s. They have thousands upon thousands of kids like that. If all you can point to is a high number or score for something, there’s always going to be someone with a higher number. They’re looking for special individuals who stand out from the number mill.

If you want to get into a college based on your numbers, try your local state university in Florida. Their computer formula will love your application.

apply to ilr as a transfer because it has a 60% admissions rate and then u can transfer into A%S really easily.

I actually had very similar stats to you, including extra cirriculars. Everybdoy was telling me that I was going to be a shoe-in.

But I have to say, i am actually glad that they didn’t accept me. I have applied to toher colleges which i woudl much rather get into. Although I am scared that if Cornell rejected me, I am not going to have any chance at the other ivies.

Was anyone rejected from Cornell, but got into other ivies?

“But I have to say, i am actually glad that they didn’t accept me.”

yea right

Wow I just started cc today…I didn’t realize people get so nasty for a simple comment

What I meant by saying, " I am actually glad I didn’t get in" was that it taught me that I really needed to spruce up my act and write the best app I could…

But thanks…

Andy: Since your numbers are outstanding, it must have been teacher recs or your application essays that hurt your chances. This is important to think about so that you can ask different teachers to write recs in the future & to change your essays.
