<p>I just ran across this article and thought it might be of interest to some. Interestingly, Denison’s class for 2010 is 36 students smaller than 2009. That is in keeping with their desire to shrink the student body at Denison (which I heard the President talk about, but I’ve forgotten the number). Also means housing remains uncrowded!
<p>
In 2005-06, Denison’s Office of Admissions received more than 5,000 applications, one of its two largest applicant pools ever. Subsequently, only 37 percent of Denison’s applicants were admitted this year, which represents a record low.</p>
<p>Highlights of this impressive class include:</p>
<pre><code>* A total of 588 have paid enrollment deposits;
A total of 28 (nearly five percent of the incoming class) are National Merit Scholar finalists, doubling Denison’s previous high from two years ago;
More than half (52 percent) graduated in the top 10 percent of their secondary school class, and more than three-quarters (78 percent) were in the top 20 percent;
The average GPA of the entire incoming class is 3.7;
The average SAT score for this class has climbed to 1270 (up from 1217 three years ago);
Multicultural students comprise 17 percent of the entering class (up from 14 percent three years ago);
Some 34 states and 15 foreign countries are represented;
More than two-thirds are from out-of-state; and
13 percent are either children or siblings of Denisonians.
<p>Denison’s Class of 2010 is as accomplished outside the classroom as it is academically. This incoming group includes some 25 class presidents, 44 school newspaper editors, more than 300 participants in the fine or performing arts, 558 who hold full- or part-time jobs through the school year, and literally hundreds who were leaders in community service. More than three-quarters of the incoming class were involved in athletics at their schools, and 188 led their peers as team captains. Many of these student-athletes will play an immediate role in Denison’s quest to retain the North Coast Athletic Conference’s coveted All-Sports Trophy, an honor DU has claimed for an unprecedented nine consecutive years.
