Got a decision: Rejectd

I thought decisions were coming out at 6:31pm but apparently they came out now. My daughter is at work and just sent me a picture of the letter of acceptance - with $25k scholarship! I am so very proud of her!! I was thinking she would be wait-listed but she proved me wrong. Best of luck to everyone else who was waiting.

That’s fantastic! I’m glad they really look at the applications and the kids applying.

Did the letters give any indication of applications and/or acceptance rates? I saw the 15K comment on Instagram but didn’t know if more details were sent out.

Accepted with $25K merit only. Very disappointed. I think Denison has done a good job attracting students because of their large merit in the past, but I feel like that the school is trending away from sizable merit scholarships.

But that is the biggest merit award they seem to give looking at results from the last few cycles. They also meet need so that would be in addition.

In last year’s cycle, people reported merit scholarships up to $58,600. It’s possible it was reported incorrectly I guess. Anyway, for a student who has been accepted into UVA, Villanova honor’s, William and Mary as a Monroe Scholar, etc., $25k is too little to give the school any serious consideration (for our scenario).

My son is waitlisted too
International seeking aid. I have a question: The letter doesn’t mention anything about scholarships or financial aid if he comes off the waitlist. If we don’t have that information at this point, does it mean he wouldn’t receive aid?

Likely means they have switched from alleged “need blind” to “need aware” for waitlisted students. My kid was waitlisted and the decision had this curious addition:

“For more information on our costs, please visit our website” (including a hyperlink)

Seems to me a hint they are looking at ability to pay at this point. Need full pay kids to help subsidize their chosen class. My family can’t afford $300k for an undergrad, so we won’t be accepting a spot. It was free to apply, so no big whoop on our part.

Denison is need-aware for all rounds. There are some third party websites which list Denison as need blind but those sites are incorrect.
In fact, at a recent open house, the AO said during a small group meeting, that collecting tuition dollars is their number one institutional priority.
However, he went on to say that it isn’t until the last spots are being filled that ability to pay really comes into play.

Gotcha. All very interesting. First kid going to college and all, so an education for me as well. Helps me to prepare the next kid up about expectations, etc. Thanks!

Accepted; Questbridge RD to Denison
Rural Virginia
Small Demonstrated Interest (No interview, no visit, completed “why denison?” supplement)
I don’t remember what interest I indicated, but something chem/bio related.
3.66uw / 4.15w
1440 SAT (700 EBRW / 740 Math)
9 DE, 6 AP, 2 H, 1 R
One State-Level leadership position, rest of ECs are extremely mid. Theme of “improving access and leveling the playing field”.

Hooks: Rural, Low Income-ish, Extreme upward trend in grades (though - no compelling excuse for it)

Is the Grant need based?

Hey,

I’m fairly sure that anything “scholarship” is merit based and anything “grant” is need based, but I could be totally wrong.

Hope this helps

Scholarship is merit

Grants are need-based.

The typical situation is merit is given first and what else is needed to meet their definition of need is made up in grants.
