<p>I thought this recent article highlights some new directions for Denison:</p>
<p>
…They plan to increase the faculty by about 8 percent and decrease the student body population to drive down the student-faculty ratio to about 10 to 1. Right now it’s about 10.7 students to 1 faculty member…</p>
<p>“We want to remain the small, very intimate education experience here,” explained Seth Patton, vice president for finance and management at Denison. “A few years back, it was about a 12 to 1 ratio. Last year, we were at 2,200 students, which was out of the ordinary. Our goal has been to be right at 2,000 students, so we’re just trying to get back to that number.”…</p>
<p>The school is shrinking the student body simply by taking smaller incoming classes, aiming for around 580…</p>
<p>School officials annually invest about $6 million in the current buildings and grounds, and they expect it to grow to $11 million during the next five years. That figure will swell when the school soon will invest about $14 million to renovate and expand Cleveland Hall, the historic art building that was built in 1904 as the men’s gymnasium. The historic exterior is going to be refurbished, and the timber frame interior is going to be gutted and replaced with a modern steel structure…</p>
<p>“It will be a real state-of-the-art studio art building once it’s completed,” Knobel said…

<p>Talk about non-news and “spin.” 10.7:1 to 10.0:1. Wow. Make that non-wow. This has to be one of the sillier news releases in modern times. Talk about contemplating one’s navel …</p>

<p>Seems like genuine news to me. School’s physical plant to be improved and will be tougher to get into as grows smaller, thus academic standards once there will likley increase.</p>
