I’m helping WildChild explore apartment options for his upcoming move to Denver. His job is a ways south of town, but he seems to want to live in downtown (or walking/short cab from downtown) Denver. I think he should be near light rail to give him that option for getting to work, since there is a stop near his work. He will be reverse commuting, but I hear traffic can still be bad going south on I 25. He wants someplace reasonable, cat-friendly and not a dump, but not too expensive.
Anyone with knowledge of particular neighborhoods/areas…the help is appreciated.
He doesn’t see any point in the half-way areas because he thinks it would be an expensive cab ride to get in town to clubs/restaurants.

Errrr… Denver is a big place, where at in denver will he have to work?

I mentioned that the job is south of town- Englewood area. Off I 25.

Based on where you said he’ll be working, this may not be possible, but try to avoid living somewhere that would necessitate driving through the Denver Tech Center on I-25 at rush hour. Traffic is awful in both directions, especially during the evening rush hour. For most commutes in Denver, buses are faster and more convenient than light rail. I live north of Denver, so I don’t have specific areas to recommend–just what to avoid.

First, congratulations to your son on his new job.

Second, if he wants the night life in Denver, he’ll want to be close to downtown and the brew pubs. Don’t know how cheap he’ll find it, but I’m assuming he’s a young single and he’ll be close to the action there. Suggest an area (very roughly) bordered by the Art Museum/Capitol on the southeast and Union Station (for the light rail) to the northwest. He should ask the younger people at his employer’s office about specific neighborhoods.

Here’s a map of the light rail system:

I’m guessing his work is closer to 285 and 25 than 285 and Santa Fe–? Anyway, 25 is nasty heavy traffic north and south a lot of the time, definitely worst during rush hours. There are a lot of popular attractions clustered in one area around 25 that can snarl traffic depending on the time of year and scheduled events: Invesco, Elitch Gardens, the aquarium, children’s museum. I-25 runs through the heart of the Tech Center. It sounds like he’s at the north end of it. He’ll probably want to commute via light rail and/or buses vs. driving if he keeps fairly regular office hours. Downtown public transit via connecting buses is good.

Denver’s a great city for young people, very vibrant, lots to do in the way of cultural and outdoor-lifestyle type activities. Good luck to him!
