Denying SIR question

do I have to go to each school I was accepted but don’t want to go and deny SIR…?

If we don’t turn in the SIR, is it equivalent of denying the school? So instead of sending rejection SIRs to many schools (kind of not so nice to them since they accept us), can we just not turn it in and let it pass the deadline?

perhaps it might free up space for those still pending?

yes you can.

I was accepted to UCSD for spring but i didnt want to go so i just didnt put anything on my SIR… and then i logged in later on and it said “the deadline to accept this offer has passed, blah blah blah, we dont defer admission , blah blah blah, please reapply again if you feel you want to attend,” something to taht affect.

Not submitting an SIR is tantamount to letting them know that you won’t be matriculating at their institution. That said, if there is another manner of responding “no” – and I think most highly selective colleges have this – you should do it, just to be “nice” and let them know that they can take a student off the waitlist. Otherwise, no action is necessary.

so being “not so nice” by saying “NO” on the SIR will free up some spots for the appealing students? hmm… seem like the “not so nice NO” is a rather a “nice” thing to do to help some others who desperately wanna get in.

where does it say that it frees up space? I think the unis do the appeal thing well AFTER the SIR deadline is passed…so they know how much space has freed up etc.

Well, the truth of the matter is that the admissions committee has already determined how many students to whom to offer admission (and to place on the waitlist) based on statistics generated from previous admissions cycles. (These statistics tend to be extremely accurate, one should note.) When the yield is abnormally low, the adcom takes people off the waitlist…

So yes, it’s a “nice” thing to do, but it in the end it probably won’t make too big of a difference. Don’t feel bad if you opt not to do it.

well, all you have to do is click a button online, might as well do it if it helps some poor souls still pending hint hint
