I was under the belief that if I enrolled in a class such as Afro-Am Studies M114D which is also classified as Poli Sci M114D (which is the class I wanted to enroll in, but ran out of room), I would get credit for the poli sci class as well. I asked my professor when the Poli Sci waitlist was full what I should do, and he advised me to add the Afro-Am class. However, my friend says that it doesn’t work that way. Any advice?

At least in the history department it says as long as the professor has a doctorate in history than you can take any upper division course with another department and have it count towards your major. Maybe it works the same with poli sci.
