It was on the strength of the Religious Studies program that UVa was able to host the first ever Nobel Peace Conference 7 years ago. The conference was coordinated by Religious Studies Professor Jeffrey Hopkins, who was the Director of the Center of South Asian Studies. He also founded UVA’s Buddhist Studies program, and it was Mr. Hopkins who convinced Nobel Laureates Bishop Desmond Tutu and the Dalai Lama to participate among other Laureates.
