Departmental plus presidential scholarship at AU

Does anyone know to what a departmental scholarship would pay for, if a student already received a Presidential scholarship?

Also, what happens if a student changes their major and it puts them in a different college at Auburn? (not the same department where the 2nd scholarship were offered) I assume they would lose the remaining 4 year scholarship, but would there be any penalty and could they apply for the new department? jw thanks.

Room and Board. The presidential scholarship covers tuition.

Don’t know about the departmental scholarship…I doubt you would be penalized for changing departments (as far as paying back the money you’ve already received), but you would forfeit additional money on that scholarship after the change. You can apply for new scholarships every year, just talk to your new college/department. Honors college offers some scholarship opportunities to upperclassmen as well.

It’s funny you asked this question. My daughter just received a departmental scholarship today and also got the Presidential. Departmental schollys can be for any amount. They are not for room/board per se, but could be used for that or for books. Her letter states that she must be in the college of COSAM and if she switches out of that college, she should contact the Associate Dean. It doesn’t state what would happen to the scholarship.

Congrats, Mustang!

D also received a departmental scholarship offer this week on top of the already generous Presidential, and she was thrilled beyond words. Books, food, and the additional cost of the Village dorm over the stipend offered will be covered. We loved Auburn already, but feel even more certain of our decision now.

Wowowowow, Sherigmom! Congrats! If you don’t mind me asking, is your daughter a NMF? Also congrats to Mustang and thanks for everyone’s input.

Yeah, I didn’t really want to call AU and ask what would happen if son changed major/college. haha

Yes, she is. Told her not to get her hopes up on additional $ because the Presidential was so great.

When the COSAM department scholarship offer letter arrived last week my daughter and I were absolutely elated. I am still in complete awe as to how generous Auburn is. I am also happy to know that good students, who may not necessarily be need-based, are still considered desirable and personally I think EFCs are unreasonably high for most families. I am ecstatic to know all I have to pay for is transportation and personal incidentals and she is working on outside scholarships to cover that. She is happy that she can save her college fund for grad school.

proud_mom, woohooo! Auburn continues to impress me with how and what they do to treat more high-achieving students well than pick very few. (ie: UGA had only 13 Foundation Fellows last year and that’s out of about 35,000 students)

Well, good for you guys and if you wake up tomorrow and feel the need to share, just let us know. hahahha

Congratulations to all who are receiving scholarships!! My daughter is a freshman with presidential and departmental (engineering) scholarships, and we are still trying to figure it all out. Her departmental and other scholarships have covered all charges to her account (including professional fees, copies, and even football tickets). Any remaining credit balance was deposited to her bank account. We don’t know yet if one of the departmental scholarships will be renewed for next year.

A little odd, DD got a follow-up letter yesterday saying it superseded the prior departmental award letter and offered 1/2 the original amount. Interesting.

erisamom, we received a 2nd letter, too. It said the most recent letter was to supercede The amount didn’t change, but it had $______ “per academic year (8 total semesters) renewable scholarship”, instead of $______ “renewable (8 blah, blah) freshman scholarship.”

Her letter shifted from XX per semester to XX per year, thus in half.
So do you read your letter as basically XX for just the freshman year?

My daughter’s letter was identical except for the change that “feedback” stated. The word “freshman” was omitted, but the amount was the same-very wierd.

Engmom, did your daughter receive more than one departmental scholarship? If so, did she get them all before her freshman year? Did she also get a general scholarship? I understand they are usually for one year only. Was she a National Merit finalist? It sounds like she has a very nice deal-congrats.

When I was up at Auburn last week, the Communications department told me they hadn’t made their decisions yet. :(:(

Hey erisa, no. It’s for up to 8 consecutive semesters/4 years, as long as my son stays in same department. I think they wrote freshman just cuz it is awarded beginning for the freshman and perhaps should not be designated as a “general” scholarship. (not that I would know why, but it must be some designation that has to be correctly written on letter for legal reasons?)

Mustang2000, Congrats to your daughter, too!! Auburn has been great for my daughter, and she loves it there!! She just missed being a National Merit Finalist. She felt she could have done better had she known more about the NMS. She is out of state, so she could never attend Auburn without scholarships. She didn’t get any general ones, but in addition to the Presidential, she was offered two departmental (Engineering Dean’s Scholarship and EE). In July, however, the first EE scholarship was replaced by a larger one. We don’t know why because we were afraid to ask any quesions!!

That’s awesome. We are out of state too (Minnesota). When my daughter got the Presidential, I thought we should at least visit Auburn. I think my wife really fell in love with the place. I think the only thing holding my daughter back is the distance from home. Then a couple of days ago my D got a full tuition scholarship from the University of Minnesota. We were happy, but my wife said, “I was kind of hoping Auburn would have been her best offer.” I’m not really a fan of the U of M at all. She’s got a few other possibilities yet, so it will be interesting.

Mustang2000: Congratulations on your daughter’s newest opportunity even though you have some mixed feelings about it. From what you have shared about your daughter, I am sure she will make a decision that is great for her. Maybe Auburn, maybe U of M or maybe some other school. The nice thing is that she is receiving offers so whatever choice she makes should be financially feasible (I tend to be a “watch the bottom line” parent.) Let us know what she ends up deciding.
