Well technically it’s because I have my interview today (hurray!) and wanted to know if any of you had any comments about the pol. sci programs, and int. rel, if any. Any professors in particular I should mention? Specific courses that I wouldn’t want to miss?

but, since it’s stupid to make such a specific thread, why not let anyone ask about ANY of the departments, and D insiders can provide their infinite wisdom lol

Just be your self. The problem with name dropping is you never who knows someone else at what they think about them. You could drop the name of a professor who you interviewer had a hellish experience with (highly unlikely, but it does happen) and that would change the whole tone of your interview. What happens if you open a discussion and can’t back up what you say with specific examples?

oh gosh, you’re absolutely right. I was always going to be myself, I just wanted to be more knowledgeable about the department in which I’m planning to spend a lot of time.

Thanks for the advice, sybbie! Very, very helpful lol

I remember once talking to a prospective student who was interested in going to Columbia and they talked about an someone (a director at the school) they knew at Columbia. They continued talking how their family was good friends with this person and she was going to personally recommend them, and their family went back with this person’s family and they knew the whole family really well.

Then she mentioned the name of the person, and I said I don’t know you and the person you are talking about at Columbia is my sister and they have never mentioned you (imagine their embarrassment).

haha yeah I knew about the difference between Government and Pol Sci, thanks kb!

I’m really glad it went so well though. It was even easier to be myself with my interviewer…because, essentially she WAS me. She was a gov major, did choirs, piano, tennis, volunteering, and was editor of the lit mag.

sound FAMILIAR?! the only thing i had that she didn’t was art, lol. So we ended up talking for a long time and she answered all the questions I’ve asked on these boards about the Gov department. it was wonderful! we talked for two hours lol

woww sybbie, that person sounds awful. totally deserved the owning lol

Well, I think it’s one thing to blatantly show off your personal connections. It’s another thing to discuss how much you admire a certain professor’s work, or a certain program/opportunity Dartmouth offers in Government and Pol Sci, showing that you’re fairly knowledgable about the resources, but not name dropping.

every 08 I know who took an intro govy course so far didn’t really like it… just so you know. the smaller classes tend to be better… eh. I run away from the “popular majors” so don’t listen to me =)

haha no i appreciate the input! it’s objective. I mean us applicants are getting a very biased picture, because it’s really only the people who are really enjoying their experiences that want to come and help us out…the pictures they paint are perfect, lol. I want to see some kids who go to Dartmouth and hate it! If they exist…lol

I have a few friends in Gov 5…they’re doing some sort of nuclear weapons conference simulation and they sound pretty excited about it actually, idk.
