Depauw released EA Dec 4 (already)
Son was accepted with nice merit. He can’t wait to fly up and take a look. Is anyone very familiar with Depauw?
Your concern?
Just no real familiarity. Husband was recruited for tennis 30 years ago and loved the school. He ended up elsewhere. Concerned about small size I guess and just curious if people are happy there!
Congrats to your son! My eldest son is a senior at DePauw and his little brother just got his acceptance today too! I’m so happy. DePauw has been a wonderful school for my eldest. He’s received a excellent education, made great friends and built solid and lasting relationships with his professors. He’s been involved with various student groups, studied abroad in the south of France and currently he’s doing research with his professor. The campus is beautiful and the facilites are top notch. Its impressive how much they have for such a small student body, plenty of space to study and grow. I am so glad he chose DePauw it was the perfect fit for him.
I suppose the only drawback is there isn’t much of a thriving campus town. Greencastle is quite small big difference coming from a big city. We live in Chicago. But it wasn’t such a big deal in the end. School and on campus social life kept things busy.
That’s so helpful, thank you! He just doesn’t know if he is willing to forgot the big football or basketball experience (Marquette current fave) for a small town LAC. We are from Texas and he grew up in the shadow of UT so you get that subconsciously drilled into you as THE college experience. I can’t wait to go visit with him!
I totally get it. I went to a Big Ten school with the whole rah rah football and bball experience. I will say as a freshman and soph it was very fun however as I progressed my interest waned. A big school def has its merits however college me and parent me have very different motivations. Looking back as a parent so many of my classes at my alma were taught by TAs and I had few interactions with real professors. You were an anonymous student in a sea of 40k students. Very common to be one of 100-300 students in a class. So I wanted something different for my son and was pleased he chose a SLAC. He’s been taught by professors from day one who know who he is. Along with small class sizes and ample opportunites to stand out he’s gained an excellent education which I think is what matters in the end. I think the same can be said about Marquette. That is an excellent school and was one that we considered as well. Good luck to him.
My eldest daughter is currently pursuing CS and Econ at Depauw 3rd year. It is small and not busy location, yet, its advantages are students can approach faculties easily and students really focus on their studying. Activities at campus are fine. Worth it for professional like CS expert.
My youngest daughter just accepted ED TCU Finance and MIS double majors, very worth it for business related career. All the best. God bless you all.
So glad to find this thread! Son was accepted over the weekend with an excellent merit package. He had a great 45-minute conversation with admissions counselor after the acceptance email and was so impressed with all the information he got and how much they knew about him from his application. Got great vibes.
The school seems excellent on many fronts to us and is a sentimental favorite, as his grandmother was a proud graduate.
His concern (and mine) is that he’s not interested in Greek life and we’ve both heard in several places that it’s a heavily Greek school where social life revolves around fraternities and sororities. He’s an extremely social person who connects with people easily, but he prefers a more low-key social scene than only raging house parties. Also loves the outdoors and socializing around that.
Would really appreciate thoughts on the social aspect of campus. Thank you!!
