Dependency Override and Dorming

I will be attending Murray State University, and they require freshmen and sophomores to dorm. Although, I am currently being processed for a dependency override from KHEAA - based on my personal situation. Since I will be classified as an independent, does the college honestly have any control over where I want to stay? I live with my girlfriend currently, and I have been for the past two years. And I would like to keep it that way and get an apartment with her.

Thanks

EDIT: Sorry if I posted this in the wrong forum topic, I couldn’t find the correct area.

You have to ask them. Many schools do require living on campus for all but married students. Just being independent might not be enough to get you a waiver.

So, there is no set “law” to exempt me automatically in the state of Kentucky?

You can always choose a different school. Is this a new requirement that Murray State instituted after you applied and decided to attend?

I doubt there is a LAW requiring freshmen to live in dorms but it might very well be the school’s policy. Most that do have that policy also allow for exception to those who live at home or those who are older that 24 or six other reasons and exceptions. You have to ask the school what its policy is. U of North Florida does NOT have an exception for those who live at home and will not grant one. You can sleep at home if you want to, but you pay for the dorm. This made my friend so made she didn’t send her kids to school there.

To answer your question- no, the college cannot control where you stay. But if they have a policy in place which requires you to live on campus, and you don’t qualify for one of the reasons that they will waive this policy, then you will be billed for- and required to pay for- the dorm which they think you are living in but that you are actually not living in.

Got it?

You could get married. Then they won’t make you live in the dorm

Before you rush out and get married, check out this list of exceptions, which a quick gxxgle search provided

Is there a school that will let you commute from your current apartment and is affordable?

Seems like you are not going to get financial help from your parents for college, so make sure you consider your options carefully to be sure you can afford a particular college. Having to pay for a dorm room and an apartment does not sound like a good use of money.

Dependency overrides are for financial aid purposes. It has nothing to do with residential requirements. The school has policies and you can accept or reject the school based on those policies. if you don’t like the policies don’t go to the school. You can ask for an exemption but they do t have to give you one. I’m

Is this still your situation re dependency? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/financial-aid-scholarships/1800136-parent-draws-in-disability-how-is-my-financial-aid-affected.html#latest

Thank you guys for the quick replies, and I have looked into the housing exemptions mommdc sent me. I am not eligible for any of the exemptions, but I can get a special exemption from the VP of Affairs at the college I’ll be attending.
