I don’t think Weinstein opposes hiring minorities into faculty positions. What he is saying is that it should be one consideration with the overriding one being their ability to teach the subject. Here is the relevant quote from the HigherEd article:

But his field is biology. If his field were history, he would probably be aware that in revolts, the more-extreme members of the group in revolt often attack the less-extreme members. The momentum of the revolt can snowball, leaving no room for dissent : EVERYBODY has to be extreme.

I thought it was only liberals who attack people for expressing unpopular viewpoints on college campuses, whereas the right always welcome opposing viewpoints and believes in free speech! Yes, I’d also like to know where the accusations of the OP against LGBT students come froml. None of the articles I saw mention anything of the kind. Or is the OP assuming from certain protestors’ appearance that they are LGBT, and concluding that that makes it an LGBT protest?

Not defending the OP in any way, but there are multiple outlets reporting this, perhaps LGBT student organizations are involved in the protests but were not mentioned in this article? It looks like it could be homophobia, but it may not be. idk
@Much2learn I haven’t seen any evidence that this is about being gay /a gay issue or that students protesting brought their “lgbt/gay” birth certificates or “lgbt” ID cards to this protest… perhaps you can link evidence??
All I see is the OP linking the words “deplorable, bizarre, ruckus, mob reminiscent of the third reich” … (which is some pretty heavy hate) to “LGBT students” … why call out the lgbt students??

I am an LGBT ally, and I am glad you asked the question. I am just hopeful that the poster has a better reason than being homophobic for making that seemingly gratuitous. Perhaps that is naive.
Don’t mean to speak for the OP, but I read that one of the demands of the protestors is that the chief of the campus police be fired. This demand stems from their allegations that LGBT students of color were being targeted by campus police. These incidents were part of what ignited the protests in the first place.

Today (6/2, Friday), the school will be shut down for a 2nd day.
This is turning into a similar melt down to Mizzou’s. However, Evergreen is in no position, financially to weather a drastic drop in enrollment.
If he was a history or poli sci prof educated before the 1990s he probably would know who Martin Meimoller was.
On the other hand, would ESC’s enrollment be that sensitive to stuff like this? It has had a reputation for decades as a school full of hippies and leftists (particularly those who do not have the academic credentials to get into some place more selective), and stuff like this does not seem like it would change that reputation. Its other student constituency of non-traditional students may not care so much about this stuff in comparison to its open curriculum and flexibility with part time, evening, and weekend attendance.
Mizzou, on the other hand, is a state flagship that theoretically students from the entire state may aspire to. But the students who would be admitted to Mizzou are more likely to have other suitable choices, and the Mizzou events look bad from both left and right political viewpoints.
Right, recent events might attract students who love this sort of thing; meanwhile that deafening clatter you hear all around you is employers hitting “delete” buttons after noticing that an applicant’s degree is from Evergreen State.
Any employer bias regarding ESC’s reputation is probably already well established, and probably won’t change.
