Dermal fillers

Now, I’m all for plastic surgery if done “right”…I"m even considering a blepharoplasty at some future date…even went to 3 surgeons in the past couple months just to talk to them about it. So I have nothing against nipping and tucking.

However, I can spot those fillers a mile away. At least the ones used in the nasolabial lines. They make the face look quite artificial, even if done well. It’s just not natural to not have cheek lines dent in when you smile…even young people have those. I used to think I would like to try them for a few indentations by my mouth, but not now.

Botox looks good, facelifts can look great (MIL has a partial one and she looked fantastic afterwards…never knew she did it until she told me a year later, I thought she just looked refreshed from living in FL) Those dermal fillers, I’m not so sure. Maybe if they are placed in other places like creases above the lips. What do you think? Can you tell when people use them?

Now you have me paranoid. I just got my second round of fillers. Most of it is in my “jowl lines”. Before fillers, it looked like I was frowning all the time. I still have faint creases, but it’s nowhere near as noticeable, so I think I still look fairly natural. From a price standpoint, I’m not sure I want to keep going in every 3 months, because that seems to be how long fillers last.

When you say jowl lines, do you mean the double ll lines between your brows?

Jowl lines are around the jaw. The 11’s are usually treated with Botox. I don’t have 11’s, though. Instead, I have these things they call bunny lines. So annoying. But, Botox works pretty well on them. Fillers can look good. It very much depends on the injector not the product and overdoing it is never good, of course.

I have had a partial face lift.bleph…whatever… (No eyebrow lift), fillers and botox, and glycolic acid treatments. Glycolic acid is excellent…but you MUST wear sunblock and hat. My facelift is very natural, but I do look different, in a good way. I do NOT have the pulled look. eyelift…I love the way it turned out. Botox…I can move everything and definitely smile. fillers…not enough effect for me.

I also had, as part of the facelift a jowl lift. That made a huge positive difference.

When you had the partial facelift, I’m assuming the lower part of the face since you mentioned jowls? Are the incisions behind the ear? Were you scared it would have the pulled back look, or did you just have total confidence in your surgeon? Sorry for all the questions, but I see this in my future and don’t know anyone who has had it done. My MiL’s was the upper part of her face plus a brow lift.

My goodness. I don’t know a soul who’s done any of those things. My friends and I will talk about having plastic surgery and lesser “work”, but even though many could afford it, we’re never serious and the discussion always ends with laughter. Maybe it’s this a West Coast/East Coast thing (I assume “bevhills” indicates location), and living among people who make their living from their looks exerts pressures we don’t feel in my part of the country. Do lots of affluent folks in California have extensive refurbishing done?

Same here, MommaJ. I know what botox is, but I’m foggy on exactly what “fillers” are. I’m surprised to hear about the facelifts - I didn’t know anyone other than actresses did this.

I always swore I’d be the last person to visit a plastic surgeon, but then I got “marionette” lines (somewhat related to jowls). This isn’t my picture, but it’s very representative of what I was dealing with. Click on the first picture. I could handle any other other type of wrinkle, but not these.

Come to SE fl, and find someone who hasn’t done some work! Kidding, of course, but I do know all the procedures.

I’d like to look better, but would prefer to travel. Last year was forced to redo kitchen. Something always gets priority. I did Botox once, and even a week later, saw no difference. May have been the person administering shots.

By mom, do you ever do facials? Trying to say, NYMOM

My facelift included my eyes, cheeks and jowls. The doctor did liposuction below the cheeks (I have a round face) and the jowls. The skin was pulled back behind the ears and there are no visible scars. The eyes were lifted and the incisions were done inside the lid. No visible scars.

I really didn’t think that I would have work done either. Ok, other than the peels I wouldn’t have work. Especially because I have been treated for cancers. But…what the heck? Of our friends at least 70% of our friends have had operations. I do not know anyone who hasn’t had something done. Note: I would NEVER have a boob job unless it was reconstruction after a mastectomy.

I had a rhinoplasty at 21. My nose wasn’t hideous, but i didn’t like it. My parents said OK, and the surgeon did a great job. Said he would give me a nose that fit my face…not a cutsy nose. I love it, it’s made me feel prettier all these years. I really think I will be doing the bleph within the next couple years, but the older I get the more wary I am. Never thought a thing about it at 21.

For those who claim to know no one who has used cosmetic dermatology or surgery – you probably do, but they just haven’t told you.

bookworm, I’ve never had a facial. And I’ve never worn makeup on my skin, or blush, or lipstick, just mascara and a little bit of smudged eyeliner. But I do go to a dermatologist yearly for a skin check, and she’s prescribed Retin-A for anti-aging and cancer prevention, and I’ve been using an SPF 40 moisturizer on my face year-round since I started seeing her. And I do put various serums and potions on my face.

toledo, I looked at some of those photos. I thought the results were very natural-looking. The women looked better but not a lot better. I never would have guessed that they’d had plastic surgery or other interventions.

I just mentioned the subject of plastic surgery to Mr B - he really freaked out because he decided that I was going to get my face hacked into pieces and end up looking like Joan Rviers (bless her wonderful heart, may she rest in peace!). Now I have his green light to buy whatever shoes and clothes I want to beautify myself as long as I don’t get any face work done! Yay!!!

I live on the east coast and know several people who have had work done, including yours truly (eye lift  )
I have 11’s and creases above my lips. Have thought about getting something done for that.

I have oh so gently toyed with the idea of getting a filler for DS’s upcoming wedding, but I am a bit frightened to do so. DH’s friend’s wife has some sort of spa and I spoke to her , but it sounded pushy and I was not comfortable with the training of her staff, so ultimately cancelled/declined the free botox (which suddenly became free only if I then did a filler). So I spoke to my dermatologist and have also had a plastics guy recommended, possibly to put a little filler in next to my nose, which will apparently plump things out a bit which indirectly helps minimize the nasolabial folds. I am still skiddish, though I’ve been told it lasts 6-12 mos. Any thoughts about Juvederm vs Restylane?

Juvaderm is usually better than Restylane which was the first commonly used filler. There are others but Juvaderm and Juvaderm Ultra are used most frequently and have nearly replaced Restylane which a lot of places don’t use anymore. Generally, it lasts longer and is a little thicker which is probably better for that application. Restylane is nice in the lips but can disappear pretty quickly. There’s also Voluma which is usually used to lift the cheeks and is injected under the muscle so it gives the best lift and allegedly lasts up to two years.

The thing about fillers is that results vary very much based on the injector much more than the substance used since they’re all about the same and are really just goop so I would let the practitioner decide what to use to get what you want done accomplished. Another thing to remember is that they are temporary and initially there will be swelling followed by maybe an overfilled look and then as it starts to go away gradually you’ll have the look you want for a while and then it will be all gone and it’s time to start over again. Free this if you do that is not unusual at all.
