My son was admitted to and received an acceptable amount of financial Aid from Desales. He did an overnight there and we really love the school and the ethos. We are Catholic and my son went to a Salesian High school so we feel very comfortable there. There is little on this forum regarding this school and wondering if anyone has any thoughts on it.
We live in NYC so the rural atmosphere is different but we like it. He is interested in criminal justice or prelaw. Our other choice is SUNY albany which is completely opposite of Desales.
I don’t know specifics but DeSales isn’t far from us. S17 has a good friend there and he’s very happy. It’s not a highly ranked national school, so i’m not surprised there isn’t much on here. It has a decent reputation locally.
There’s an intersting little cluster of really nice small catholic schools in that area that are really strong for certain majors. DeSales, Misericordia, Arcadia, Moravian (used to be catholic). They all have really nice campuses and a very “homey” feel to them. You might want to take a closer look at the actual major your Son is interested in, and how many students are pursuing it. If you take Misericordia as an example. It has a great reputation for Nursing and Radiological studies. Might not be the right choice for International Business or Physics.
Thank you Nova. My son is interested in CJ. Desales has a 100% law school acceptance rate if he goes in that direction. They have a nice program in forensics, security etc. He might also flit over to history or another of the liberal arts. I also know they have a consortium with other schools in the Lehigh Valley and students can take a class or two per year at Lehigh, for example. The student who hosted him was interested in international relations and took Russian at Lehigh at no additional cost.
@BronxBaby , regarding the consortium, The Lehigh Valley Association of Independent Colleges is comprised of DeSales University, Muhlenberg College, Cedar Crest College, Moravian College, Lehigh University and Lafayette College. I’m a graduate of Cedar Crest from way back when and took a bunch of French courses at Muhlenberg. (I partied at Lehigh - wink wink!)
@Novacat9191 Arcadia (formerly Beaver College) was never affiliated with the Catholic church or any other religious group. Moravian was founded by and is still affiliated with the Moravian church, a Protestant denomination.
@kidzncatz - actually you are half right. Although never a Catholic college. Beaver was originally a Methodist Episcipol College and later a Presbyterian College. Now just a school with a cool castle on campus
