Design Vs. Art

Firstly, what are the major differences between the two besides Art being more Fine Arts oriented and Design being more industrial/communicative design oriented?

Secondly, suppose I want to apply to the School of Design. I realize that portfolios for the School of Art and the School of Design is separate. Does this mean that the School of Art wants more paintings and stuff and the School of Design wants more of a design-oriented portfolio with like sketches of products and etc.?

I was at a info session a few days back and the lady there told me it didn’t matter. They just want to see your artistic skills.

I’m just a little skeptical since I’m short on time. I’m a junior who’s trying to apply for BCSA next year…

Your best bet at understanding the curriculum might come from looking at the required curricula of the two programs and seeing what sort of electives people go for.

For the record, I only remember one assignment each from my art and design friends. Art had to draw a circle freehand. Design had to design a bench which could flat-pack into a box.
