Design your own college?

If someone handed you a university, what would you base your acceptances on? Standardized test scores, political/religious views, grades, ECs, volunteer work, essays, projected hotness of students, etc? Be specific as you want.

Well I would love to be the director of a college full of eccentric, brilliant people with all kinds of interests. So I’d look for a minimum score on standardized tests (~ 1700 sat, or maybe 27 act? not sure about how those two relate) but the main focus of admissions would be stand-out ec’s. I’d want people who really focused on a subject or idea and made it theirs. So anywhere from the kid who shows a talent for film making, to the one who started a business, to the science genius who isn’t perfect in every subject but definitely has something going.
how would the college be run? I really have no idea…

27 ACT = 1820 SAT

I’d require people to submit whatever information they thought would help them. Some colleges are test-optional, but this would be everything-that-makes-you-look-bad-optional (unless you had a criminal record or something). I’d accept the ones that impressed me the most.

Nice person

2,300 minimum SAT

GPA, ECs, class rank, and any other scores are not considered.

I would have applicants indicate the feature they want me to focus on.

If they’re extremely great at art, they’d indicate that and I would largely ignore everything else, like grades. Same thing for academics. It’s just so hard for a person to be well-rounded and have a billion EC’s. It just doesn’t happen. I’d rather see an applicant who pushes her/himself into being successful in one thing. I think that’s more valuable.

People that have ambition, I guess. But with consideration to the opportunities that were available to them, not only in their school, but in their town, state, or country. If they didn’t have much opportunity and had to do things themselves, they’d have no disadvantage compared to a national merit finalist who was an excellent piano player.

As for grades, maybe ACT of 30+ or SAT of 2200+ if the college was very academic (top 25). If not, 24 or 1600 seems good. SAT subject tests would be optional, but could be used to display students’ academic interests (e.g. languages, history, sciences).

If it was an Ivy League, maybe add in an essay for the applicant to display an individual talent or passion, and the activities/steps that they have done to follow it. It would show self motivation, ambition, and extracurricular interests in the student, and it would go further than just a quantitative list of ECs. (I’ve never looked at the Common App questions, so this might actually be a question.)

Other than that, demonstrated interest in the college would be useful, so you would know that the student has looked into it, thinks that it’s right for them, and that it isn’t just another college on the list.

Sorry that this was so long!

I’d be SAT/ACT optional because I believe that not everyone is exam orientated.

An essay would have to be written but I wouldn’t want the applicant to write about exam scores, predicted grades etc because they have to send them in anyway. Instead I would want to know about things that aren’t been sent in; future plans etc, what makes them different to every other applicant.

An interview would be important so I could see how they would fit in with the college.

I would also make it so that the school would be affordable for most students because I think that everyone has the right to an education.

Call me crazy… but if I was handed a university, I would make South Harmon Institute of Technology a reality.

28 - ACT
SAT - 1400 (M + CR)

3.5 GPA

All prospective underclassmen will be interviewed online if they meet the requirements listed

A good amount of EC’s that are genuinly related, not some haphazard group that a try hard created so they could get into HYPS; at least 6

Beliefs really don’t matter, as long as atheists aren’t trying to bash Christians and vice versa; etc.

Awesome B-school, engineering school, and School of Education, no arts. (no offense but imo I feel like it’s a waste of money to make a whole variety of art majors)

Maybe some students don’t know how to do simple things in life so they’re required to take a life skills class on how to clean, pay mortages, etc.

No textbooks, online power points are available, but attendance to class is still required

Oh, and it HAS to have a monster football team, and preferrably be in the South :)

3.75 uwgpa with 4 or more APs 3.9 if less, 2000 SAT, a few ECs and hopefully some leadership, and good recs would be the only requirement. An applicant would only have to meet those and would then be guaranteed admission (as long as (s)he does not have a bad disciplinary history, etc.). The strength of the school would come from a large class (maybe 10k?) that is all reasonably intelligent and able to afford good researchers/lecturers due to the large endowment resulting from letting in so many smart people.
