Can you design a minor or major at Columbia?

yep, but it can’t just be something that you do on a whim. you have to talk to the department(s) involved, and have them determine that this very unique and isn’t something you can just do in a different major. here, you have to let them know which courses are going to be involved (another factor: make sure there are enough courses in your designed major to be substantial). then you file a a few forms to the committee on academics and they say yes or no to your major. you might want to do this toward the end of your freshman year, but seeking information earlier can’t help.

Would working on it say now be beneficial?

What are you trying to design? You probably should wait until you get to Columbia and take some classes and get to know some of the professors who can help you.

Minors

Psychopharmacology
Nutrition

Kind of narrow, I’d think. There aren’t enough – if any – undergrad courses in that field. If you want to specialize that much, you can do it in your PhD thesis.

Given that Columbia doesn’t offer any undergrad courses in nutrition (to my knowledge), how do you plann on pulling that off?

Wasn’t aware of that, thanks!

In addition, Columbia College doesn’t offer minors. They only do majors, and concentrations (which are halfway in between minors and majors).

edit on a previous comment: “…but seeking information earlier can’t HURT.”
