Destroyer bumps Russian warship in port

The destroyer Curtis Wilbur is operating without restrictions after bumping into a Russian ship two weeks ago while maneuvering into port in Vladivostok, Russia, according to a 7th Fleet spokeswoman.</p>

<p>The Wilbur was maneuvered by tugboats into the Vladivostok harbor June 30 when the ship hit a Russian Udaloy-class destroyer, the Admiral Panteleyev, which was docked. The Wilbur was performing a “Mediterranean moor” — mooring stern to shore — when the collision occurred, Cmdr. Dawn Cutler, a 7th Fleet spokeswoman, told Navy Times…</p>

<p>…There are 11 midshipmen from the U.S. Naval Academy and other universities onboard the Wilbur this summer, according to a Navy statement.

“Parallel parking” isn’t a problem. The med moorings are the challenge. In a med moor, the ship drops its anchor while backing into the pier. The ship is secured to the pier by mooring lines from the pier to the stern.</p>

<p>Apparently, the USS Wilbur “bumped” the Russian ship while being backed into the pier by tugs. Regardles of how the incident occured, the CO is responsible.</p>
