Detailed question about clepping a foreign language.

Hi,

I am an Aerospace Engineering major trying to transfer into UT-Austin. Their program now requires two years of foreign language in high school, or a two semester sequence of the same language at college level. I took two years of ASL in HS, but do not remember a thing about it, other than, “Hi, my name is…”, “Turtle,” and the alphabet.

I took nearly a semester of French (approximately 3/4) at another school, and had to drop for personal reasons. I remember a little of it, and I’m sure after a refresher, I’d remember most of it. I do not want to take two semesters of foreign language, and I am thinking of studying French on my own time to clep out of it.

My question is this: Is it possible to start from ground zero and learn a language proficiently enough to clep a foreign language test? One more question I have is, do you recommend sticking with French? Or should I move to a more phonetically spoken language like Spanish?

My friend and I plan on doing this together, if we do.

Let me know your opinions. Thanks.

Also, this is important. Typically ASL would transfer into UT with only two years of HS language. However, they’ve made the requirement that all ASL students meet with a translator to prove proficiency. As aforementioned, I’m far from being proficient in ASL. I’m closer to it in French, if that gives you an estimation of how far off I am from knowing any ASL…
