Detention of Would-Be Migrant Children

I have not seen any discussion of this here; is it too much of a hot-topic or are such discussions off-limits? I’m not sure as I am fairly new to CC. Thanks.

This will very quickly become political and be locked.

The topic is not off-limits - until it becomes political.

Per the forum rules:

Based on experience, I don’t anticipate the thread will be open long, but we’ll see.

I spent many years working with babies, toddlers and preschoolers. How anyone could possible try to justify this policy is not anything I would ever want to understand. There aren’t adequate words to describe the disgust I feel over what is being done to these children right now.

Editing to add that I won’t be coming back to this discussion. If I do, I will end up going all Samantha Bee and getting deleted anyway. Because after spending some time on discussions on FB over it, I can already predict the cruelty, heartlessness and utter stupidity thatnis going to result before the discussion is closed.

What are the alternatives? Lock kids up with parents? That would be illegal as the law stands as of now.

I have spent many years working as a volunteer within the community of mostly-Hispanic illegal immigrants. (I’m sure someone could do a search and see how often I’ve posted about this). And I say with a heavy heart and respectful voice that the issue is very, very complicated and what one sees on TV is not the whole story. There are enormously consequential aspects of the issue that aren’t reported on, and people need to remember that this is an ongoing problem over the course of many years, not something that has just begun.

So parents are locked up for a couple of weeks for the misdemeanor of crossing the border without authorization. and then THEY ARE NOT GETTING THEIR KIDS BACK. The kids are being shipped thousands of miles away, to places like Michigan and New York, and the government is not keeping track of which baby or child belongs with which parent. Parents are being deported without their young children.

To me this looks like kidnapping. Where is the legal justification for deporting the parent and keeping the young child?

Keep families in detention together, which has been policy for twenty years.

And agree with @mom2twogirls.
