E.C.s - oboe, highest rankings at district and state solo & ensembles, invited to participate in state concerto competition twice (I think top 100 in state)
Band president, drumline section leader (bass drum)
Detroit Symphony sponsored youth orchestra
NHS
Random community service (about 50 hours)
I work in the summer as a caddie, honor level, I was runner up rookie of the year (woohoo)
Varsity golf team, scholar athlete, most improved player

*During my junior year, the school switched to a trimester schedule, and many have had their grades suffer. I think the school is considering weighting extra.
*Also, I will have taken 5 classes at a neighboring high school because they didn’t offer them at mine (3 of them senior year) by the time I graduate.

I know my E.C.s are pretty standard, I’m trying to push the dedication to music and caddying in my applications. Right now I’m looking at:

U of Michigan engineering
Michigan State
Northwestern?
U of Chicago?
U of Rochester?
Rice?
Johns Hopkins?
Carnegie Mellon?
Duke?
UNC?
Ivys?
Others?

I’m looking at going into engineering and maybe acoustics or something to do with sound and music. Thanks to all that are willing to help and sorry for being so long-winded!

U of Michigan engineering- Match, you’re in no sweat
Michigan State- Safety (you’ll make it into the Honors College with some scholarship $$)
Northwestern- Match, you probably will make it in
U of Chicago- All depends on the essays
U of Rochester- Match, you’ll make it in
Rice- High Match, I think you will make it in, but with 22% selectivity Rice is becoming a little harder to forecast
Johns Hopkins- High Match, you will likely make it in
Carnegie Mellon- Match, you should be in
Duke- Reach (I would consider Columbia’s engineering school, though, as IMO it is better)
UNC- Match, you will make it in
Ivys- Reaches of course, but you have a pretty good chance. Like I said, I would only apply to Columbia out of all the Ivies if you are interested in engineering
Others?

P.S.- JHU does have the Peabody Music Conservatory, and you can double major in music and something else at JHU if you go there, though admissions to Peabody are quite difficult due to its prestige.
Carnegie Mellon also has a great music school, as does UMichigan. As for the others, not so much.

Did you have more advanced classes available then the ones you took? What’s your class rank?

I’m in the “honors program” for all the core classes and language for my grade level. A few are in a higher math because they came from a different middle school. We don’t rank or give percentiles or valedictorian (if it did I think I’d be in the top 3).

smart.cookie: thanks for the suggestions. I still haven’t decided about music in college… Isn’t double majoring in music and engineering ridiculous? I guess people do it though.

Does your school also have APs for core classes?

For the most part, no. Most people only take APs their senior year, with the exception of AP US and AP Psych. You are basically required to take the honors courses.

“Isn’t double majoring in music and engineering ridiculous? I guess people do it though.”

You would be insane if you did (enormous time commitments for both majors) but you could still take music electives in college :)

Then you’re a reasonable candidate at all schools.

great shot at all and the ivy’s are toss-ups.

I’ve somewhat finalized my list of schools. If anyone could chance me on:

U of Michigan
Michigan State
Rice
Duke
Northwestern
WashU St. Louis
Cornell

For kicks: Stanford, MIT, UPenn

Also some updates: Got 5s on the Psych and Microecon APs, getting NMSC letter, got into DSO Civic (top youth symphony in Michigan), joining new math club at school, GPA is 3.943 UW and 4.420 W.

Thanks for the help!
