Hello everyone. I’ve been a CC observer for a long time but have never posted until now.

I’m a graduating senior and being a CO resident, I naturally applied to the University of Colorado at Boulder (College of Arts and Sciences) thinking that I would categorically get in. Long story short, I got rejected with the following stats:

White/Female
Unweighted GPA: 4.0
Class Rank: 1 of 483 at a public school
SAT I: CR: 770 M:750 W: 800 (E:12)
SAT II: US History: 720 Literature: 770 Physics: 700 Chemistry: 710 Math II: 700 French: 800
ACT: 35 (Writing 12) (Sent both the SAT I and II’s and ACT)
Income: 20-30

EC: Concertmaster at Youth Orchestra, Volunteer at local homeless shelter (300+Hrs), Volunteer at a local community hospital (100Hrs)

I’ve contacted the AO and was firmly told that they have made their decision and was not going to review my application again. Needless to say, I was dumbfounded to find out that I didn’t get in because I always thought that my grades and test results were more than adequate for CU.

I’m currently considering to attend my local community c for the time being but if someone can give me some insight, that’s would be great. Thanks.

Universities do reject overqualified candidates because they figure that even if they accept you, you are more than likely not going to their schools … so why waste a spot in their freshman class on a likely no-show?

I am not sure what to tell you. Does CU have area representatives that you could talk to and see if they could help? And were you applying for a specific department/major that you may be able to contact the dean and talk to them?

There are still schools that are open for applications. Look for other schools ASAP. What do you want to major in? What kind of school?

While universities usually reject over-qualified applicants, they definitely would take a risk with someone with stats like OPs, especially if she wrote her essay about how UC was her first choice.

SAT100, I don’t understand why someone would waste other people’s time by making up fictitious stories and posting them here. I don’t mind being called a ■■■■■ but my genuine intent was to find out why they said no.

vlines, I was hoping to major in English and I don’t know anyone who is directly connected to the school or the office of the Dean. As for other schools, I’m looking at CSU as their RD deadline is Feb. 1.

here is the page at CU for the english department. Call the department head, or their assistant. Explain your assistant. Email them your info/transcripts/resume/application. The application deadline for CU was extended to 2/15, so you may still be able to get in if you really intend to go there. But you will have to work hard on it. How far do you live from the university?

Do you think that’s possible even after the AO told that their decision was final?
Since I live about an hour away from Boulder, I will try to talk to the department chair personally.
Thank you very much for the info.

The worst that can happen is that the department is unable to help you, or have any level of pull in the admit department. the fact that they extended the application deadline for 2 weeks tells me that they have not made final decisions on all applications yet.

Is there any reason for them to have rejected you other than grades or SAT (which look fine)? Like disciplinary issues, police record, did not have the necessary HS coursework, something else?

Just explain your situation to the department head, why you want to go to CU. See if they have any ideas. Be persistent, but not obnoxious (no stalking).

The AO is usually programmed to tell any student that calls and asks if there is any way to be re-considered “no”.

vlines, I have no crime or police record but both my biological parents are under incarceration. I do not know them personally as I was raised by my grandparents.

rodney, Apologies for posting this thread in the wrong place.

any issues on your school record with discipline, or bad letters of recommendation? I’m just trying to figure out other than denying over qualified applicants if there was a reason for rejection that you may need to explain.

The only thing that comes up to my mind is that I stopped going to school in 7th grade for a year but I caught up by skipping 10th grade. I’ve worked and studied diligently since starting high school.

I would just recommend that you follow up with the people I already gave you info for. And maybe your guidance counselor at school can help. They usually have contacts at the instate schools.

I wonder if skipping 10th grade made a difference at all? Maybe you did not have the required academic sequences they wanted? Also, see if anyone on the Colorado thread here on CC has any info or contacts for you that may be able to help. I am not sure how active that group is, but it would not hurt to look there.

Did you have to write essays for admission?

Yes, I sent in two essays. The topic was standard and being a good writer, I don’t think that was the deciding factor. And I’m quite sure that I had the required academics on my transcript.

I will definitely talk with my guidance counselor on Mon. Thank you again.
