Did any or many in-person colleges / departments retain distance education infrastructure that they had for COVID-19, so that students who are sick (from anything) can still attend class (without giving sickness to others)?

My kid missed his 2nd week of his first semester this fall because he got covid on Labor Day. I don’t know about institutional / departmental distance infrastructure. But anecdotally, all his individual profs wanted him to attend class and lab by zoom as much as possible. His classes were all small.

In fact, we got into a bit of a tiff with him because he was acting like it was still high school where you miss school and can mostly deal with it when you get back. We’re both profs and he asked us what to do so we told him: email all your profs right away, ask if they want you to attend by zoom, say you’ll get notes from a classmate, etc. He instead decided to rely on the notice sent out from the health center and just do nothing for over a day.

That came back to bite him because the health center notice didn’t get sent right away. He had to eat crow since he missed a whole day of classes (and a quiz) without notifying his profs, when instead they wanted him there via zoom. He shaped up the next day and attended virtually the rest of the week, then never missed a class for the rest of the semester.

As for the institutions where we work, my anecdotes suggest that profs with smaller classes often invite the sick zoomers. Larger classes have more trouble accommodating virtual attendees so don’t seem to do it as much.

As of last year, most of my D’s classes were still being live streamed or at least recorded.

I had/have kids at Rutgers, Clemson and UDel during Covid. None of my kids were offered an online option unless the class was officially online, and from what I could tell other students weren’t offered the choice due to illness. I also currently have a grad student at BU and haven’t heard of students having an online option (this is obviously all anecdotal).

To clarify, in person attendance was still expected, but they continued recording for students who were ill.
