Essays are Key.

Does anyone know who got rejected even after an interview?

Edmandoo: Well, I don’t know anyone personally who got rejected, but I’m confident that it does happen. After all, showing interest doesn’t mean that you’re necessarily qualified. I was deferred and I came from PA to interview, if that helps.

yeah same here infinityiseight. I just hope everything works out. I never heard stories of people who did do interviews and got rejected, only maybe deferred.

I hope that you’re right then, and that both of us get favorable news from UChicago in the spring I’m getting more and more excited about this place every day.

Got in EA, no interview! 27- ACT
I know someone who got an interview with 2 U of Chi alumni, applied earlier than me, had a 36- ACT, 2380-SAT and still got rejected. Oh and he was mighty involved very funny and intelligent.

So interview or not, your chances are pretty much the same.

I think it also depends on how the interview goes…and I don’t think his scores determined how well he did in his interview

I think it depends on the essays a lot.

Essays are really important and as with anything no interview is better than a bad interview.

A question to Amanahill, Lamia or anyone who knows – Is it possible that applying EA overrode the 27 on the ACT? I’m just a bit concerned because I have a 29 and applied RD. My essays and recs are very good, and I have a strong GPA and strong ECs.

How much will a terrible interview hurt my chances? The rest of my application is very strong, but I didn’t connect with my interviewer at all; we spent twenty minutes discussing my interest in Austrian economics… and, well, not much else. He asked me what I would do if his pen was magical. >_<

Different people, different personalities so not everyone will mesh together, but it’s a good thing that the interviewer was interested in learning more about your interest in economics. It may seem like there wasn’t a personal connection between you and the interviewer, but that’s ok. The interviewer may still see you as a good fit for the school.

Interviews are not that important. Admission officers won’t say, “What? He didn’t do an interview!? We CANNOT let him come to this school!”

A little ridiculous huh?

Your essays are the key at Chicago, because it’s the best measure of how much of a fit you are for Chicago.

(Btw my interviewer - aside from talking about why I wanted to go to Chicago and what I liked doing - was more interested in talking about pop culture … movies and Britney Spears and such.)

I did not have an interview either. Accepted EA, 28/27 ACT scores. I’m glad to know that the admissions process is equally weighted.

For UChicago 27 is on the low end but it is still not a bad score. Plus my English was a 34. lol. And I went to this seminar that they held and for them the ACT is not all that important. The rep said that it is one day out your entire High School experience and not a really good judgement. Where I think I made up for the 27 was my essay and recomendations. And the crap ton of community service and EC’s proly helped too. lol. I wouldn’t worry too much if your essays are good and the overall package is good. Apply EA is most definately NOT and advantage. If you think I’m lying just look at the numbers for this year’s EA.

Did the seminar say the same about the SAT too? I really hope my essay hits it out of the park for me; I wrote a 2-page, 20 stanza poem “showing” the reader how to get from UChicago to my house following Route 66.

I got in with no interview EA, but I have really good stats (2400 SAT, #1 in my class), decent extracurriculars and my U of C essays were probably the best ones I’ve written (because they had the best questions).
