Did atrocious on the SAT; SAT Optional Suggestions?

I went back and read the entire thread because I was interested in your story. You kind of remind me of my husband! I will share this story with you to show you another option, or just to help take a little stress off, either way it may be helpful.

Back in the “old days” (ha ha early 90’s), I finished HS school completely stressed out. Yes, I had some fun, but I worked my butt off taking everything I thought was “mandatory” for college and then some. Did well on the SAT’s, etc. I got into Cornell and several state schools here in NY, but thought I wanted a small LAC. My Aunt payed for she and I to go on some college visits because my parents just thought if you get some money, go to Cornell, end of story. After making the rounds, I chose Syracuse – a larger, sports oriented, expensive school which is what I thought I didn’t want but one where I found my niche, enjoyed myself immensely, felt challenged and did well. Because of my grades I got good merit aid. I guess my point is one of your state’s large “easier” schools may look one way on the outside, but will have a lot of diversity if you look deep down. There will be people from all walks of life, Valedictorians, and those shocked they got in. You can find your place if you look!

On the other hand, my husband was a smart student such as yourself that had about your gpa and never even took the SAT or ACT! He never took any math past Geometry! No AP’s! He and a few friends thought Florida sounded nice and applied to a Florida community college that accepted everyone. Expenses were less than a NY state school! We weren’t boyfriend/ girlfriend at this time but friendly. He said I’d be stuck in the snow, he’d be at the beach. I said “I’m a serious student, you’re just going to party.” He said no, I’ll get my work done, and said I had always put to much pressure on myself. Low and behold, two years later, don’t you know he shows up at Syracuse! We both stayed right through grad school! We both have the careers we desired! We got married! Two kids! And he still tells me to relax, I put to much pressure on myself! (And sometimes I have to give him a kick in the butt to get moving!) Married 15 years in February!!

Moral of this story, I guess: Do your best, be realistic, by all means apply wherever you want but take a look at those places that might not sound like what you want at first but fit your profile and financial situation, and you just may end up having the time of your life where you may have least expected a year or two ago!

Your brother should have his SAR from FAFSA in his online account (he would have been E-Mailed a link). He can check for the EFC.

Okay, so I figured out the problem. My dad emailed FASFA and it’s still pending. He did it this summer, but I guess it takes time for it to come in.

I’m not sure if the schools on my list require the Profile for financial aid. Thanks for the feedback about Flagler, greatly appreciated! :)

early_college, something is not "right’ with this FAFSA story. You need to encourage him to sign in with you present so you can see what exactly is going on. You need to know or straighten this out before you start this process.

I just asked him today and he said he emailed them recently and they said it’s still pending.

Something is definitely not right with the FAFSA story. It doesn’t take this long and should not still be pending. Sorry, but it sounds as though you’re not getting the real story from Dad.

I didn’t ask him about it until today. He won’t tell me unless I ask. The EFC didn’t really matter for technical school because my brother was getting the HOPE grant.

you have a passion for the holocaust? wow. not the best choice of words.

I just wanted to share the good news with everyone. I just found out I have received an academic scholarship to Lenoir-Rhyne U in the form of their Lenoir-Rhyne Scholars program. My scholarship level is $10,000 a year for four years. I am still working on my other apps, so I haven’t submitted any others yet.

Congratulations on the scholarship offer!

Thank you. I appreciate it! :)

Oh yes, study a grammar book. You" did atrocious on the SAT" is incorrect. You did atrociously on the SAT is the correct form of grammar. This will greatly help you in college.

I just realized that I am turning into my parents and being a bit nitpicky.

Congrats on your scholarship.

Congrats! Will that make L-R affordable for your family?

It really is going to depend what financial aid package I get. However, Lenior-Rhyne is much cheaper then most of the other schools on my list. It’s around 33k a year with room and board. However, it really isn’t my top choice. College of Wooster, Lawrence, and Hobart are my top three right now. BTW, I also qualify for an automatic 10k scholarship and a couple thousand geographic diversity scholarship from Hiram College.

Congrats! Keep working on your other apps and try to get all of them submitted by Mid-November. This really helps to keep the stress level down a bit for the rest of the year.

I suggest you visit Lenior-Rhyne to see if it’s really what you’re looking for in a college. From what I saw online, it’s very small. This may sound good to you on paper, but it can get very old rather quickly. Sometimes, it can feel like high school all over again. Visit and spend some time on the campus. Check out the dorms and eat in the dining hall. Walk through the campus and take note of the activity level and energy of the students. Check out area surrounding the campus. Is there easy access to things off campus? I would hate for you to get attached to one college and then find out much later on in the process that the school isn’t anything like you thought it would be.

Also, if you need any academic supports, check that out carefully

an 8 is reasonable on the essay (I got an 8 with essay but 1890 composite a couple years ago)

I make a study schedule for example reading one chapter each day out of a practice book. It only takes around 10 minutes usually. Then you should have time to do other stuff, as long as you don’t procrastinate. study schedules work even if you have just a couple months. (like right now)

My daughter just applied to Ohio University in Athens. I am not sure what you are interested in but their out of state tuition isn’t too terrible. They give aid to oos. It is a very pretty campus with a liberal atmosphere. My D also applied to College of Wooster, Wittenberg and Ohio state. She will also be applying to Hiram, Ohio Wesleyan, Lawrence and some others. Hiram is very small but my D liked it when we visited.

Have you looked at John Carroll or Baldwin Wallace? Sorry, I don’t want to add to your list at all…just curious. Congrats in the scholarship.

Okay, everyone is going to find this weird. I know I did, but in a good way. I just had a skype interview with Hiram College. The interview went fine and he told me he would give me a decision in 30 minutes after he read my file. I had already submitted my application on 10/30, but they were waiting for my test scores to come in (they did receive them). He said he had to find my transcript and then he would give me my decision. Well, literally 5 minutes after I spoke with him on skype, he IMed me and told me I got in. I was shocked how quick the decision was! He told me I received AT LEAST $10,000 a year. I will also be receiving a scholarship for being out of state. Just wanted to let everyone know.

I have also applied to so far:
Lawrence U
Ursinus
Juniata
Clark
Ohio Wesleyan
College of Wooster
GCSU
Knox College
Wheaton College (Mass)

I should find out my decision to Knox by Friday and Ursinus and Juniata’s decision should be pretty quick as well.

I still have to apply to:
Allegheny
Earlham
Hobart and William Smith
Sarah Lawrence
Flagler

Also, Hiram is giving me up to $300 in travel expenses to visit campus.

Great job, early college!! Way to go! Be proud of yourself…and I am sure your parents are proud of you too.
