I’m reading the yelp reviews on San Jose City College and I’m starting to get hesitant on whether to attend SJCC,

Can anyone testify as to whether parking is really that bad, that you get fined for even going over the white line, and cars getting broken into often?

And are the professors really that bad, for a science or bio major at least?

Feel free to pm me

Thanks

I live pretty near to SJCC, but do not attend, and I’ve heard some of what you describe from those who do attend.

Most CCers from the SJ area would rather drive or take the bus to neighboring De Anza in Cupertino to avoid said problems. From SJCC it’s only 2 bus lines away - whichever one stops right in front of SJCC (Moorpark, I think) to take you to Saratoga Ave, and then the #23 takes you right to DA via Stevens Creek (might need to take 57 to the other end of Saratoga if you don’t want to walk that portion). Or a parking pass at DA is $13-15. Plus gas. I spend ~$30-35/wk in gas, but I drive from Saratoga Ave to Downtown SJ and then to DA (so back the opposite direction) everyday in a 10 gal 43 y/o car. 2x as much/mo than a VTA $70 adult pass (or you can spend $5 or so and ride free with your DA DSAB card, which is the student ID), but it turns your commute from ~1.5 hours to 10 minutes via 280/85 (or Stevens Creek surface street).

DA also has a lot more student services and better organizational structure than SJCC. DA gives parking tickets too, but to me don’t seem as strict about it. The biggest thing is that you have a parking pass. I’ve never heard of a car being broken into during the day at DA since it’s pretty busy almost all day long, even is Summer. Students constantly going in and out of the parking lots make it harder, but there have been a lot of big security issues in the past, particularly attempted rapes/assaults in the parking garage (I never park there). Otherwise I think DA has a decent campus security program and I always asks the girls in my night time classes if they would like to be walked to their cars.

If you can afford the commute (either in time or $), then I would suggest going to DA over SJCC.

The parking thing is not something I would worry about at SJCC. I always parked outside of the campus to avoid paying for parking. Very easy to find free spots within 1 or 2 blocks of campus. If you were desperate, you could park at VMC for free and walk to SJCC. At DA, good luck finding any college parking spots during the first week. Your vehicle might get a love tap during the quarter with the tight parking spots. And don’t think about parking in the neighboring shopping centers.

Half-agree. Parking during the first 2 weeks of any quarter is hard at DA b/c it’s before a lot of students have dropped classes or have decided not to go/don’t need all the starting appointments, but really after that it’s not absolutely terrible - only a little heck-tick if you’re trying to get to campus at the 12-1 O’clock hour. Before or after, not so bad.

Many many cars get hit and dinged on the sides because of the combo of small spaces and the fact that most of the students don’t know how to drive there. This is also mostly due to the combo that they’ve barely had their license for <3 years and they’re driving mom and dad’s car around, so they’re not extra careful as if it were theirs. A feasible way around this, for me anyway, is to drive a smaller car and don’t be too lazy to park wayyyy close to the front of campus as you can get. I notice a lot of “driver-smart” students just decide to park away from the car traffic and have a more pleasant parking experience.

Also, you can park off of campus close by (close IMO). There is a Panda Express right across the street from DA that has like 8 parking spots, but they all say 30 minute parking only. But right across the other street (where there’s a Jamba Juice, Togo’s, FroYo, etc) is a ton of parking, free to use. It’s one cross walk away from being on campus. Plus, if that’s full, then the parking lot adjacent to the Panda Express (where Whole Foods is) also has a giant parking lot (for shoppers obviously) and I’ve heard of people using that one as well. That’s 2 cross walks away b/c it’s diagonal to campus.

i just got accepted to UC Davis as a bio major from SJCC and I can tell you some teachers suck while others don’t just like at any other school. There can be issues with parking but if you are willing to walk then there is never a problem. I enjoyed my time at SJCC if you have any questions you can msg me. If this will be your first semester i can recommend for Bio take Dr. Newton and for Chem 1A/1B take Dr. Cabrera. I had both teachers and they were awesome.

one more thing i forgot to add is that the school is on probation and going through an accreditation process so that is something to keep in mind

^^SJCC is fully accredited…and it’s been over a year since they were put on probation so the likelihood of anything happening is pretty low.

I went to De Anza – I’ve heard from many classmates that they didn’t like SJCC. Consider what you prefer too, quarters or semesters. I can say De Anza tends to have more classes available, prereqs-wise. Check assist for you major. If SJCC lacks what you want (especially true if you want Cal or UCLA), consider De Anza.

Then again, my house is about a 3 minute drive away from De Anza. So I don’t know if the commute is worth if for everyone.
