Did I break my thumb?

So last night I had a sleep study & was warned basically every few days not to miss my appt or be late, so when I fell and hurt my already arthritic wrist 10 minutes before I was to leave, I just slapped an ice pack on it and drove off.
But today it hurts worse, I couldnt really get all the goo out of my hair ( from the leads) because washing yourself with one hand is hard,:stuck_out_tongue:
I havent yet gone to the dr, because I didnt want a lecture on why I am avoiding her, but the pain is moving to my wrist & down my arm. Its probably between a 4-6.
I need a new thumb joint which I have been putting off & I suppose I could get an xray, but would they do anything besides tell me not to use it( which I am already doing)?

Is it swollen and bruised? Usually broken fingers and toes bruise up quite a lot when broken…spoken from recent experience, which needed surgery. If it’s not swollen and bruised, and it is not getting worse, I think you could use a hand brace to immobilize and see what develops. Even if it were broken, they’d need to wait for swelling to subside before any surgical intervention. Good luck!

I fell on my hand a month ago. It turned black and blue and I decided to have it x-rayed after about 6 days. My doctor said they couldn’t see a break, but that sometimes it takes 2 weeks for the swelling to go down in order to even see a break. You might want to hold off on those x-rays. She also told me that hands take a long time to heal because there is not much of a blood supply. I’m debating whether I need a second set because my hand still hurts.

It is swollen but I think the most that could have happened is that I fractured a carpal bone. It sure hurts though, I’m definitely going to have joint reconstruction this summer.
But it will be good to get it over with.

I broke my thumb on December 30. I saw a hand guy who put me in a thumb immobilizer for 6 weeks. 4.5 months later it is better but STILL somewhat swollen and still hurts when I try to use it. :(

I have a friend who had the same surgery that I need , ast year. I know she had pretty intensive physical therapy, but about 3 months later she had full use of it.

It seems that your hand shouldnt still be swollen unless you have arthritis or something else going on.
How annoying.

We’ve had a rash of broken hands/wrists in the office lately - three in a row. If you are avoiding your doctor (and I can’t say I blame you) go to the ER or urgent care and have someone else look at it.

Its doing a lot better. Its not showing any bruising.II bought a brace to wear since we are going out to a show & I wanted to protect it.
They arent designed very well. Virtually all of the supports at the drug store had an elastic/neoprene sleeve you had to squeeze your hand through to use.

^^^^I hate those supports. It starts hurting my wrist. My brace was a thumb brace only (called a “frog” brace I think?). The proper brace can be dependent on where in the thumb the fracture is.

My problem is that I also tore a ligament or two, which is why my thumb continues to hurt and the swelling hasn’t gone completely down. Soft tissue injuries can take much longer to heal than bone fractures.

You don’t realize how many times a day a healthy thumb comes in handy until you can’t use it.

Well, thumbs are the most important fingers.

I suspect that the “brace” you bought at the drugstore is not as good as some type of splint you could buy at a surgical supply store. The splint would immobilize your thumb; the brace only wraps it tightly.

Apropos of nothing, I just realized that the "Post edited by . . . " note is no longer bright flaming red.

I had a cast made by OT department. I had DeQuervain’s tendinitis. I’m sure I messed up spelling. Nonetheless, I kept the cast, and if I overuse hand, I put my cast on hand for a few days. I have not tried a CVS/Walgreen cast, just the one made for me. Anyway, hope by now you have found some relief.
