I recently have been having doubts as to my choice of major. I majored in History in college and graduated several years ago. Since then, I have been thinking of returning back to school to major in something else such as English or Political Science. I am interested in government work and writing/editing jobs currently, but lately I have lost ALL FAITH in my major. To me, a history major can only teach and that is it. If anyone knows something different on what they can do with this major then I am all ears, but I don’t know anyone that has majored in history and when I do meet someone, they don’t know what they are going to do with it.

I was thinking of going back for my masters, but at this point, it is very expensive. Should I just go back for another BA instead? Should I go back at all? I need help…

Well, I have a friend who has a degree in history (with a minor in econ). He’s an officer (captain) in the army, working in logistics.

And, in terms of government jobs, you need neither English or Political Science degree. Your BA in history should have given you plenty of writing skills. Getting a job in government involves lots of testing of basic skills (plenty of people apply to be bureaucrats) or getting involved in your “local” (but at any government level, municipal, state, federal) political activities, often starting as a volunteer and making connections. In your situation, I certainly wouldn’t go in more debt to get another piece of paper, unless you really want to learn about politics or English, rather than using it as a mean to get a job.

An English or political science major is not in any different of a job situation than a history major. Also, in general a bachelor’s is going to cost as much as a master’s (unless you get substantial financial aid) and is going to be much less useful than a master’s.
