Did I offend NU?

I wonder if I may have been waitlisted because of a line of my “why northwestern” essay:

Northwestern consists of a bunch of nerds freezing their behinds off while studying in lieu of supporting their Big Ten not so-Wildcats.

I followed it up with these two lines: Well, that may be the stereotype, but I prefer to call it a community of intellectuals braving the Evanston cold while trading off beer for Beowulf. I wish to be a part of this community, and I feel that I may excel at Northwestern, both academically and socially.

However, if someone was reading my essay quickly, they may not have seen what I was trying to do, and may have been offended.

I was trying to grab their attention with that line, which I may have succeeded in doing, but it may not have had a positive effect. Oh well, haha.

For what it’s worth, that doesn’t sound offensive to me. Anyone who read it would see where you were going with it. Hang in there!

If they were really offended, they probably would have rejected me. I think I also messed up by not checking “yes” on the debate box because I am an award-winning varsity debater.

That would catch my attention–in a good way–if i were an admissions officer having to read thousands of boring essays…
