I was at a dinner at my mother’s best friend’s house with my family, hers, and another friend’s family. We were just doing our own stuff and playing games with the kids on our own in the house. One of the kids there was a friend I had known for a long time and we had practiced music under the same teacher for a while. Because I was really bored, there was a big silence where I ended up just sitting there doing nothing and it seemed he had slipped over to my mom’s bf and were talking about work and internships over the summer. Id been actively engaged in looking for one but partially due to a bunch of things I didnt end up finding anything beneficial to do over the summer (laziness, fear that it’s not even worth trying with my mediocre grades, don’t know where to turn to for recs)

Anyhow, TLDR: I ended up awkwardly hearing him securing a paid job offering/internship it seemed and it looked like she was looking for more people. She works in like business/finance/Wall Street I believe. But it wasn’t very clear so it could have been anything. I spent the rest of the day regretting not going over and talking about it or bringing the subject up.

Here are the facts and Reasons:
Why I did not talk to her about it:
-I am working as an unpaid research assistant in the Pscyhology department a couple hours every day around midday. What would be the point? I already have something and I should. I mean it’s really bad to wait until that late to stumble upon any openings
-We are all supposed to find our own ways to jobs by ourselves?
-It’s not really related to my field of research either?

Why I should have talked to her:
-So what. I should have at least talked to her and gotten more information about what she was offering and see if I could fit it in. Nothing wrong with that?
-The amount of bulshi ttery that goes on in asian culture is crazy. Im just sick of doing things with no fear in my mind sometimes because there is sometimes backlash. There was a chance that he would have been like ‘gfto this is a private conversation’ if I butted in because it was and I wasn’t too close to them. I mean the amount of competitiveness is sometimes just ■■■■■■■■ and it blurs the line between being friendly and interested vs trying to secure a job. In this instance, I chose the path to not interfere because I just hate it when people treat me very coldly since it looks like Im just trying to steal something competitively from someone else when Im just interested. (happens all the time when I ask too many questions on schoolwork I dont understand to people I dont know too well)

In all honesty, I think I made a bad decision by not doing something I should have. And although it’s not that significant I think I should at least contact her and find out more. I think Ive just encountered too many overly competitive people who treat you like scum for being competitive with them in academics.

the real TLDR; I just want to know is it worth having an internship at a business place to prepare for premed if Im already doing a little RA work at a pscyh place since this is all I can find? Or should I just stick with the RA thing by itself?
