I am prospective transfer student (freshman, Econ and international studies) who goes to a large state school (around 30,000 students). After visiting my brother at Colby, I realized that I would much rather go to a small, academically focused LAC. I’m currently taking 18 credits, However, if you don’t count model UN and ROTC courses, I only have 11 credits! I’m afraid that the admissions committee will think I took a “light” course load. I was attracted to Model UN because of all of the interesting research and writing involved, and the fact that It could help my pubic speaking skills. I love it so far. It honestly requires more work outside of class than Econ. The reason I took ROTC classes (non-scholarship) was because I thought I wanted to join the Army, but after about a month, I realized I wanted to pursue my HS freshman year dream of being an Air force pilot (that dream died due to complicated reasons. this post is already too long.). Although I find ROTC enjoyable and rewarding, I wish I had not taken ROTC classes and instead kept my summer job and saved up for flight training, eventually applying for Air Force OTS after graduation. I already have to explain my bellow average HS grades, and I feel like this makes my application look weird.
TL;DR: did I screw up my sophomore transfer chances because of ROTC/Model UN, and the fact that I only have 3 “core” classes?
my current courses are:
Bio+lab -4cr
Calc- 4cr
Econ- 3cr
Model UN - 3cr
ROTC class/pe class - 3cr
international studies capstone - 1cr
some other ECs:
- Research with my Econ professor
- currently working on an album with my friend(I’m doing most of the work)
- Adult league soccer
- hopefully flight training, if it is possible for me to maintain great grades and work.
some places I’m applying: Colby, Colorado college, Colgate, Reed, Union college, Vassar…etc(small LACs)
