Assignment: What is your view of the claim that we often appreciate the things we have, not when we gain them, but when we lost them?

Often times individuals have appreciated the things they have when they lose them. One of those individuals was me. I didn’t realize how much my grandmother has taught me until she passed away. Now that she isn’t here no more, I feel like I have no one to talk to when I needed someone. Now, I also appreciated the friends that I had back in the time when I was in California. From the time I moved here, about 5 years ago, until now I had to make new friends.
My grandmother used to say to me, “Son…can you help me with this?” I would sprint across my house to help her with it. Our relationship has been strong for a very long time. We would talk about everything from school to political issues around the world. Sometimes we would even argue about things that I now find useless. We would fight verbally. Usually the winner would be the one to talk last. Now that she isn’t here anymore, I miss all those times when we did fought. I learned many things from my grandmother when we would talk for hours on the weekends. During the time, I didn’t realize how fast she would be gone, If I knew, I would have did something. But I knew I couldn’t stop her death either way. I would’ve hung out with her more often.
My transition from Los Angeles, California to New York City was a difficult one. I had lost all of my friends that were close to me. We would hang out in the park, go to the movies, and even make funny jokes about one another. Well, those were the old times. Now, I don’t even see them anymore. Now I miss the times when we used to go to parties and laugh all night watching recorded episodes of The Simpsons. I didn’t realize how much fun I had when I was in California. I always thought it was dull and wanted to move out. But now I live in New York City with not so many friends. Although I do have a few, they are not really close to me. When I get really bored, I would make long distant calls to my old friends. This happens about once a week. My mom would let me make these calls, because she knows how I feel after we moved.
The things I get are often appreciated when I have lost them. I realized how much I loved my grandmother when she passed away. I learned how to move on with life. From my transition from Los Angeles to New York City, I realized how much fun I had with my old friends. Now I will miss them a lot, because I don’t get to see them anymore.
