Did this girl get into UCLA for being poor?

I graduated last year but this still confuses me.

I knew this girl…average student. Took a good amount of AP’s. But she wasn’t that brilliant. I remember when we were applying to the UC’s, I asked her where she applied and she said all of them but that she HOPED she would even get into UCR. I know her GPA was pretty low, it was well under 3.5. And her SAT wasn’t great either. I also know she had to work a lot though to support her family and she was a non-white.

Wow I hope someone she knows/her never reads this…oh well they’ll never know it’s me LOL

Probably not for being poor, if anything for having to work a lot to support her family. People who have to work don’t necessarily need as high stats in order to get into good schools, especially if they are doing it to help their family. She could have probably done a lot better in school if she didn’t have to work, and the adcoms know it.
