HOORAY for sabaray!!! So very happy for you! That is such an awesome achievement! :)

Woohoo Sabaray! Nice work!

Sorry for the delay in responding, and this is probably TMI, but…

I herniated my L4/L5 disk while working out - I was doing a cable row, 2nd set, 11th rep, 120 pounds… the pop from my lower back was audible.

It wasn’t too bad initially, but over the next year it worsened to the point where I could only stand or walk for about 5 minutes before the pain got so bad I had to sit down. Physical therapy, chiropractic, massage therapy, steriod injections… nothing helped.

So I decided to get surgery. I got the full package - laminectomy, discectomy, facetectomy, foraminotomy. I had some complications - my surgeon said that due to my congenitally narrow spinal cavity and a lot of scarring, he wound up making a small tear in the dura. This required that I lay flat on my back for a day and led to some other unpleasantness, so I wound up spending two nights in the hospital.

The relief was immediate, though. I’d say 98+% of the pain is gone, sometimes my foot will get a bit numb but otherwise it is pretty good.

I have to be careful when working out not to put too much compressive load on my spine, and when stretching in certain ways, My surgeon advised me not to run, so my ultimate frisbee career came to a crashing end.

I’m glad I had the surgery, it has worked out well for me.

35 minute easy run, trying to keep hr below 140. I wasn’t as successful today even though I did more walking, but I think it’s because I did the speed work yesterday, that and it’s very windy today. I got a face full of dust/dirt a couple of times. I was glad I wore my hat, but I wish I would have had my sunglasses.

ohio, yes the intervals are tough! I have to pretend that I only need to do 8 of them, and then keep egging myself on to do just one more. The training plan I’m using has me adding 1 per week until I get to 16 of them. Bleck!! But I do find them helpful when it comes to race time.

Gym Day

rowing intervals
Pilates/core
back squats
deadlifts
30 burpees/1 minute jump rope/20 burpees/1 minute jump rope/10 burpees

sabaray:

Yay! 5 pound party time! I love those kinds of parties…

CJane:

I’m in awe of even doing 30 burpees.

notrichenough:

Ouch. Stuart McGill likens these disk injuries to bending a wire coat hanger. You can bend and bend it and bend and then, suddenly, it breaks. Glad to hear that it is a happy ending. Apparently, almost all of us have disk issues, to some degree. The darn things just wear out.

I wish it was thirty new pounds I’d lost, but hey, I’ll take it any way I can get it. The gym has made a huge difference. I am not going to be someone who is ever enthusiastic about exercising at home. I wish I could, but I just don’t want to. I haven’t been as good at reporting my calories, etc., but they have been pretty consistently 1000 calories or thereabouts and I eat pretty much the same foods (which is getting to be a problem). As produce comes into season it will get easier/better.

I wanted to get back into running but without some initial conditioning I would get too frustrated trying to get back into it. Now I just need to work on my upper body strength. Just call me a work in progress.

Thanks everyone, for all the support and encouragement. I love reading about everyone’s success, no matter what their goals.

I find it hard to track permanently, especially when I am eating the same stuff in a pretty narrow range. A month here and there a couple of times a year as a refresher seems to be the best I can do.

Sabaray, I’m glad you’ve been able to return to running (and with gusto!). It’s nice to get to do what you love.

NMinn, what the heck is up with your weather? So much snow in April!

Rain, sleet and snow today. Roads are really bad at the moment. Was running errands and had to come home after seeing accidents along the way. No walking, jogging or biking outside around here! Dreaming of warm weather!

Sabaray, 30 lb lost is 30 lb lost. Congrats!

NMinn, it’s been cold around here, but I should not complain after hearing about your weather. Hoping that warmer days are just around the corner for you!

Last day of the nasty drug. My legs have not fallen off yet. :)

5.12 miles, looks like about 8:42 pace. First time I’ve run a decent distance under 9:00 in a long time.

Pushups and stretching video. Today is one of my bad schedule days. I would like to get in a little more later on but I have a few errands to do and the weather outside doesn’t look inviting. Temp is okay, but it’s breezy and cloudy.

Nobody loses 30 “new” pounds. It’s always pounds that we worked really hard to put on in the first place! It’s still party time, when it’s gone…

Maintenance has its own set of challenges, trial and error on figuring out how much leeway you have with food and exercise that can’t be as vigilant as it is during a short-term diet stage.

BB:

Hope you’ve got the infection beat and can get back to exercising at full steam. Crazy as it sounds for somebody who didn’t exercise for 25 years, but now it’s really difficult to be laid up for days and not be able to do anything. I start to feel like a slug…

Wow! BC, you’ve really been knocking it out of the park with your running this year. Great stuff…

Low 80s here but supposed to storm like all heck tonight. DH is flying in…hope he gets here before the storms. I had a nice walk this morning cause I knew I would be in rehearsals etc. the rest of the day. :)

Pushing 90 degrees here today. I procrastinated and by mid-morning it felt too hot already. I rode my bike for 45 minutes or 8 plus miles instead. Wishing you in the north some of the warmth, especially before S1’s graduation. May I order up some mid 70’s, partly cloudy, absolutely no-snow-on-the-green-grass weather for May in Minnesota?

sabaray- that’s really great!
NMinn- I would be pulling my hair out. I used to get SO tired of winter when I lived in Chicago. This is just TOO late for snow.

BCE- nice running! You have gotten really fast.

We are doing a short solidarity run/walk after work here at the company to honor the Boston victims. I’ll do about a 3 mile run (did 4 this morning).

In checking hiking trail condition reports, I had to google a new term: monorail. Turns out it’s compacted snow and ice that is left after everything else melts. Looks like no fun at all:

[Monorail 1](http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Va5g7JvEYJU/S_Kc4ZK_xBI/AAAAAAAABIU/XZ4RPAB1pfA/s1600/100_5776.jpg)

What’s really discouraging is that this one was taken on Lonesome Lake trail, one of the trails I’ve hiked in Franconia Notch. This photo was taken in June!

[Monorail 2](http://i800.■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■/albums/yy285/Peesalot/MonorailaroundLonesomeLake.jpg)

Saw photos of the over-50 hiking group outing up Mt. Major last Saturday. Mt. Major is pretty far south. I figured that it would be early to melt. The conditions looked absolutely awful. Large lakes of partially melting glare ice all over the rocks on the summit.

Another trip report from Mt. Monadnock (very far south) didn’t sound good either. One of the lower connector trails was described as water flowing the length of the trail.

Have you considered the mountains in Western MA?
