Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Nrdsb4…Yes, get an ipod! Music can really distract or enhance workouts. I find certain songs help set a pace for me. Congrats on sticking with the training!

Hit the gym and rode the recumbent for 75 minutes this morning. It was really humid in the gym and gray and rainy outside. Got a little over 15 miles in. Had my HR up and even did some intervals. Yay! Jumped out of bed to work out even though H thought I mght take off for my bday. No way! I think I need to try and set aside time for weight training on a consistent basis.

Garland…I have a friend who stands for hours in a surgery center. She swears by Danske clogs.

Garland…so sorry to hear about your feet. I hope you can figure this out…I don’t know what I would do if I couldn’t walk. I do really enjoy biking though, so keep that in mind as an alternative. The traffic is also bad around here so we think nothing of throwing bikes in the car (or on a bike rack) and finding a good place to ride. Lots of flat and hilly trails around here…great workouts.

OK - I’m getting sick of my exercise playlist. Can any recommend some good spirited songs to add to a second playlist? I don’t like heavy metal! I DO like r&B, even old disco…

Oh, and I ordered this book called the “I diet” from Amazon. Used to be called the Instinct Diet…and it’s more a move to lifestyle changing habits vs a diet. After losing 12 lbs, I have hit another plateau and I’m tired of it! Only 10-15 more to go but it seems like that will never happen…

toneranger, I went to Target and bought a couple of those cheap CD’s like “Sunny 70’s” and “Disco”. Maybe you can find some things like that and just make that CD a playlist.

toneranger–my other favorite activity is kayaking, which fortunately doesn’t take much walking. As long as my feet can get me down to the water while carrying the kayak, I’m good to go! (looking forward to warm weather and time off from work for more time on the water!)

toneranger…have you looked at the nike running site? They post free downloads sometimes. [Nike Running - SportMusic Blog](http://inside.nike.com/blogs/nikerunning_sportmusic-en_US/)

Old disco?

Turn the Beat Around.

Born to be Alive.

Don’t Leave Me This Way.

OK… now that I’ve proven to myself that I am sticking to a program with my personal trainer, I’m going to head up to the UA outlet store in WI this afternoon and get myself some real workout clothes after my session. Picked up a new pair of New Balances this week as a reward, and am getting tired of all my calf-length or longer bottoms as it’s starting to warm up a bit here. After our session on Tuesday, he told me he felt it was the best one we’d had… we finally found my ‘push’ level without making me dizzy. I also ate a handful of pecans before the workout.

I have a tiny 2 gig iPod that only holds about 200 songs. Those get loaded totally by random luck from all the iTunes songs I have rated as 5-star. So it’s luck of the draw. I change it every few weeks and get a different random selection.

This load is really mellow – lots of alt-country, Ryan Adams, Cowboy Junkies, Van Morrison type stuff. Great for strolling on a pretty day (like today).

I don’t know what’s happened. I missed working out for two days in a row on Mon/Tues for the first time in 13 weeks and lost 2.5 pounds. Crazy.

IDad,

Is that the iPod Shuffle?

No. It’s an old 1st generation nano. I got a little of everything on my walk today. Funkadelic. Van Morrison. Beth Orton. Thievery Corporation. Bonnie Raitt. The Doors. Katy Perry. Lady Gaga. Willie Nelson.

The hills got me today. Minute and a half slower than Sunday. I think it was probably the sun, maybe a little de-hydration. It was hotter than I thought. Probably should have worn shorts instead of sweat pants. Good workout for an old fat guy.

idad…I think we have the same ipod nano…lol. Got my refurbished real cheap a couple of years ago. Love it but really could use more capacity. iphone will be in my future so I’m holding off.

I have all sorts of playlists…lots of mellow stuff too (love Van) -even a yoga list. But my fast exercise playlist is getting OLD. Thanks for the suggestions here. I will check them out. I heard a few good ones on the radio today and frantically scribbled them down after I got in my driveway. Otherwise…poof, they’re gone.

Garland…kayaking is great! Tennis elbow has put a crimp in that activity for me. Maybe by the late summer, I’ll be OK.

Dear Garland,

I’m no foot expert but so far have never met a woman who didn’t swear that Dansko was by far the most comfortable shoe they ever tried on. Have been wearing then over 20 years. Why? Ballet. If you want to see damaged feet, then look at dancers. And they wear either Danskos or Crocs when they aren’t in pointe shoes.

There is a ton of arch support in Danskos. I’m not sure how it works but they give your foot lots of room and yet support your foot at the same time. Understand the trepidation about clogs (How will they stay on my crazy feet?) but trust me five minutes into them and you will be converted - unless your foot issues are more specialized. Again, no expert here.

InterestedDad,

I think there’s a lot more happening on this thread than politics and I feel as if we could have a whole sub-topic on health/fitness. Anyway, the music issue is very important. I find that finding the right music makes or breaks my workout. And I also have discovered I’m kind of a tacky person when it comes to workout music. I like old stuff, beebop stuff, nothing too artistic.

Neil Diamond “Cracklin’ Rose” - just gets me feeling like moving, what can I say?

Madonna “Dress You Up (in my love)” - can’t stand so much of what she’s said and done but this dumb song makes me really work

Stevie Wonder “I just called to say (I love you)” - no matter how much pain I’m in I smile thru this one

The Monkeys “I’m a Believer” - makes me feel 12 again and that’s helpful sometimes

The Mommas and the Pappas - “Monday, monday” - makes me smile thru the pain

Here are my song scribbles from today in the car (to be added if they’re available on itunes!)
Natasha Bedingfield - “Unwritten”
Franki Valli - “Oh What a Night”
Kelly Clarkson - “Since you Been Gone”

I can’t BELIEVE the last one…never would have thought I would have a KC (American Idol…ack) song on my ipod…but it’s real bouncy :)

I have lots of old rock…Bowie, Fleetwood Mac (lots), Stones, Sting and some new stuf (Dave Matthews). But for fast exercise, I like stuff I would never listen to normally. I guess that’s not unusual.

The Cars make great workout music. I’m also partial to working out to early rock-n-roll. Rock Around the Clock, Buddy Holly etc.

For walking I usually go a little slower. I mostly listen to Pandora. My favorite walking stations are my protest music station (Phil Ochs), my 60s folk station (Peter, Paul and Mary), my Texas station (Guy Clark) and my more British folk station (1952 Vincent Black Lightning.)

Debating whether you should tell me where this place is at or not… I’m spending the summer in Whitewater…

heeheehee; it’s at the Prime Outlet in Pleasant Prairie, which is just over the IL/WI state line a couple of miles, off of I-94. I did some major damage there today. The good news is that I doubt you’ll be spending all the money I did on sports bras.

Let’s face it; you’re not really debating it. If you were, you wouldn’t have posted ;)

From Whitewater, it would take you just over an hour to get there.

LOL. Yes I won’t have that sports bra expense. I wear a lot of this stuff on a daily basis… in fact I actually have UA khaki-style pants, UA duffle bag, and UA briefcase/computer bag along with all the t-shirts and athletic shorts, etc. Oh, and their tennis shoes are the best shoes I’ve ever found.

Yep, I will definitely be making a trip there… must remember to save this…

One of my online running forum friends (who I have met in person) just (ended 3am Central time) ran the World 24 hour championships in France. He ran just under 155 miles on a short loop course in 24 hours and was the 2nd American leading Team USA to the bronze! I can not even grasp this feat. I am nothing! His last 3 or so laps were successively the faster laps of ANYONE for the day. Geez. This guy does 50 mile runs on a friggin’ TREADMILL!

^^That is more than amazing! I just happened to read an article about these races. Apparently, one of the female runners who qualified is an amputee who runs with a specially designed prosthetic leg. :
