50 miles on a treadmill beats 135 miles through the Death Valley, IMO!!!

Those massive mile races are just crazy. I have NO desire to ever do something like that. My discs and my knees would be completely trashed. These people must be genetic freaks or something.

I have All My Music, which contains a lot of ballads, Bonnie Raite, Allison Kraus, Beatles, etc. – and then there’s my Running Music, which absolutely must have a fast, pounding beat for me to keep it up. Think Ricky Martin, B52s, Dire Straits, Meatloaf (I love Meatloaf!), and some Eric Clapton (Tulsa Time). I’m always looking for songs with a very fast beat.

WOW! Can’t even imagine running all those miles…well… running at all for me!

Biked again today. My workout buddy wasn’t available so I went earlier and brought a book. Didn’t work out well. I checked my progress at the 15 min mark and I was off pace. Ok…reading while biking doesn’t work well for me. Got out my ipod and cranked the volume and got back on pace. Did intervals as so many of you suggested. My HR stayed in my range and I was happy. I was also happy that I didn’t even hesitate about going to the gym without my partner. Yay!

NorthMN, I think you’ve turned a corner. Exercise is now a part of your routine. That’s a huge step!!!

NM, I don’t think the people on the '09/'13 thread know you’re such a gunner over here on the Diet/Exercise thread!

missypie…Ha! Got to get this weight off and make my knee feel better! Used to play competitive tennis many years ago so I used to be a little athletically inclined! I truly need to lose about 40-50 lbs! Losing weight is hard for me. I’ve never been one to drink soda, eat sweets or even red meat for over 30 years. Really didn’t gain weight until my
40s and that was from no consistent exercise after a cerebral hemorrhage and eating too many carb rich comfort foods! (I love bread!) Now I am getting the exercise part back in my life and slowly working on the diet part. With D1’s wedding in a year I really need to figure this out! ( I didn’t even have cake or any sweets yesterday for my bday! ;))

With such willpower, I know you will be successful. Just keep the long term (2011 wedding) goal in mind. We both know how slow our metabolisms get when we are the age we are.

There is a teacher at the middle school who was so obese that she sat at all times…she sat on a rolling chair and would roll herself over to the kids when needed. She didn’t participate in fire drills because she was not easily mobile. A couple of years ago she lost what has to be at least 100 lbs. There were rumors of surgery, but she truly lost the weight through diet and exercise. She’s not what anyone would call slim, but she is a normal weight…yesterday we saw her *walking home /I from school…five years ago she could hardly walk into the building from her car!

Wow, this is an interesting read:

Great list, Bunsen. I would add socialization - am enjoying my new friends at spinning and Latin Heat classes.

^^Good point, sewhappy! Ever since H and I started exercising together, our level of “togetherness” went way up :)

I went to spin class yesterday morning for the first time in about 3 years. I was a little miffed that the class was only going to be 45 minutes. In Dallas the classes were an hour. As soon as it started, I remembered how d### hard spin class is and was wondering if I would make it through the 45 minutes! Thank God it wasn’t an hour! Great workout and the teacher was pretty good. My instructors in Dallas were professional track cyclists, so I was a little spoiled. I don’t like the spin classes that are led by screechy aerobics instructors and involve jumping around in the saddle. I was really tired after that class!
Now I am in PA for Penn graduation and I am mainly going to have to walk for my exercise for a few days. It is going to take tremendous willpower for me not to RUN on the trail instead of walk, but I need to heal this stupid hamstring. Last time I was here I didn’t do so well with the non-running. There is a cheap elliptical in my sister’s basement. I might do that some, too.
I’ve gained a little under 2 pounds, which isn’t too bad since that included 3 trips out of town that were pretty food intensive.

MOWC:

Just jog out to Swarthmore and then walk the hills there for an hour or so. That’ll get your endorphins released!

My hills in TN are bigger than the Swarthmore hills, if you can imagine. Where I am on the other side of the Phila metropolitan area I get to be on a pretty, flat rail-trail. With hamstring stuff you are supposed to try to stay pretty flat. Ugh.

MOfWC - congratulations to you and the Wild Child!!!

Thanks, BB. It’s been a real roller coaster, but I’m proud of him. And my daughter sang today (I wasn’t there) at Vanderbilt Divinity School graduation. She has 1 more year for MDiv. One of her classmates put a short clip on Twitter for me.

Yes. Tennessee has some nice hills! Especially around Chattanooga and over in the Tri-Cities area.

MOWC: Just keep thinking how healed your hamstring is going to be. You’ll have the healthiest hamstring in all of Tennessee!

And congratulations on the graduation!

OK… time for some honesty here, from the ladies.

As I mentioned upthread, I went to the UA outlet mall yesterday and picked up a number of items. Prior to yesterday, I worked out in a t-shirt and capri-length bottoms. I bought two short-sleeved tops and two sleeveless tops, as well as two pair of compression shorts. Loved the feel of the shorts and when I got home, I ordered two more pair, because the only color they had at the outlet mall was black. They have a 7" inseam. I hate the capri-length bottoms, yet when I’m doing reverse crunchies, or am on the leg press, I need something that doesn’t slide up my thigh when my legs are in the air… which is why I loved the compression shorts. I did buy one pair of running shorts that has the built-in underwear (it’s like wearing spanx under the shorts).

When I got home, I remembered that I am not 25 anymore (in fact, I’m double that), and started to question whether someone my age or not should be wearing compression shorts to the gym. The tops I bought all come down and hit me right at the hips. My legs are not bad… I have no varicose veins, and very, very little cellulite (you have to really look).

Next time I walk in the gym wearing this, are people going to say, “That lady is wearing stuff someone 20 years younger should be wearing.”

Here’s a link to the shorts I bought: [Under Armour | Women’s Ultra 7" Team Compression Short | 1001226 | $27.99](http://www.underarmour.com/shop/us/en/womens/apparel/bottoms/heatgear/pid1001226-Women-s-Ultra-7-Team-Compression-Short/1001226-001)

Whadda ya think? Be honest.

teriwtt, what were the prices like at the UA Outlet? And selection?
