Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

3.2 enjoyable miles out on this nice cool night. :)

Another brush-clearing day, a pullup (for me it’s a HUGE thing to do one in good form), and a walk in the cool evening with DH. And some stretching of the hamstrings, which I will do right now.

Love this thread! :)

Pull up party time for mommusic!

I did some in my workout, but they kicked my butt. Kinda had to punch the clock on that one…

I’m going to tell this story because it should make you laugh. The other day after my run I went over to the playground and did something like the following:

1 jump up to top of pull-up position, hold there for a little while (definitely can not pull myself up to that position without a jump), and let myself down slowly

1 attempt at pull-up without a jump, which gave me a slight arm bend hang position and brief hold in that position

1 jump up to top of chin-up position, hold there for a little while, and let myself back down slowly

As I let myself down from that last attempt I hear a little kid say, “Boring.” This made me smile as this is definitely not my strong suit, and if there’s a snowball’s chance this kid thought I might be capable of some gymnastics feat, well then, that’s pretty good, lol!

Deborah T–that’s exactly how I started in my quest to do ONE, about 4 months ago! I wanted to avoid injury (tendinitis of the elbow, for instance.) Keep at it, you’ll get there!

I don’t know if I’ll ever get there, but I am having fun trying. :)

I think the fact that my warm up this am will be the hottub and that there’s fog rolling off my pool is a signal that my aquajogging season is coming to a close. Keeping the pool heated to 87 in this weather is the equivalent of just setting money on fire.

But I sooooo love jumping into the pool even if its a treadmill day, or especially on those days, that I’m reluctant to turn the heater off. The impact of the cooler temps this last month has meant the equivalent of a January heating bill, but if it keeps me moving, its an expense I can sorta rationalize. When the leaves turn and the gig’s totally up, I’ll be one sad puppy.

(Though I will have snowshoeing to look forward to and I am actually looking forward to it.)

I’m going to treat myself this weekend to a new and heavier kettlebell for a little routine I’m working up to add to treadmill or hill. I was trying to teach my mom how to use it on the weekend and noticed that it is truly too light. My little sis, who is a runner and has a trainer, was surprised that I’m outpacing her in terms of strength when I’m not going to the gym. I told her it was because I have a cyber-roomful of trainers  hi ho!

MomWC, good luck in Vegas this weekend. WC’s gf sounds lie the real deal  And happy birthday month to all our September babies. Mcson is also a September baby (28th) so I know how charming y’all must be iRL ;). (Mcson really IS charming IRL…not being facetious!)

Deborah T - someone has got to invent a workout that uses playground equipment! It will come not a moment too soon for bookworms like me who sat in the corner reading instead of playing on jungle gyms!

You people are a good influence! I haven’t been feeling well but after reading about how everyone is getting out there and getting it done, I ran 2 miles on the treadmill. It was better than doing nothing and I was grateful we now have a treadmill.

Brag alert about my daughter :). She signed up to do a half marathon this upcoming weekend. Things were going well but she’s been dealing with a hip injury. She went to her doctor but he said it was tendinitis (not sure I agree and wish she was closer and could get her to our doctors) but instead of giving up she continues to train. The elliptical didn’t hurt her hip and last week she did 10 miles on an elliptical. I can’t imagine doing the elliptical for 2 hours, 2 miles on a treadmill and I was going nuts. She has plans to complete her race this weekend and I am so proud of her for continuing.

I’ve fallen off eating well with the end of summer. Too much ice cream and barbecue but have to get back! It’s after Labor Day, time to eat healthy!

Back from the lake. Hit new records on my fitbit! Yay! More steps and flights of stairs than ever before as we worked to move in to our renovated lake home. Back out on the walking trails today!

Congrats MOWC! :)

Off to sneak in a day of hiking in the mountains. “Easy” little hike on the [Kancamagus Highway](https://www.google.com/search?q=kancamagus+highway&safe=off&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=yDMnUtDwLPehsAS1z4GoCg&ved=0CAkQ_AUoAQ&biw=1132&bih=714).

Deb922, that’s what we are here for - to make each other feel motivated (guilty?!) and to help each other back on the bandwagon!!! 2 miles on the treadmill is a honorable workout! 2 hours on the elliptical sounds like TORTURE!!!

Welcome back North - how great a trip that must have been to move into your new digs! Do you have a daily or weekly goal for your fitbit???

PG, Al Kavadlo has some YouTube videos filmed out on playgrounds that are fun to watch, if impossible to replicate.

I also just saw a video the Art of Manliness website has (enter “the art of manliness may 24, 2013”) with familiar exercises. Are we allowed to try if we don’t have the mustache?

Why didn’t I see that when I was trying to figure out how to do inverted rows without a Smith machine?

I heard on NPR if I just do 15 minutes of exercise every day, I’ll live 3 years longer. Of course that’s if you are starting at zero - but it’s a good reminder to just do something every day.

This month’s Scientific American is full of interesting articles about food. Very interesting one about addiction to sweets and obesity in rats. [url=<a href=“http://www.scientificamerican.com/editorial/food/]The”>http://www.scientificamerican.com/editorial/food/]The Food Issue | Scientific American Reports/url :)

Interesting. I definitely feel as though sweets / carbs (in my case, things like brownies, cookies, sweet drinks from Starbucks, etc.) are addictive and I am best re-directing them elsewhere. I’m now drinking iced coffees, sometimes with skim milk and sometimes without, instead of lattes. OTOH, things like fries, chips, burgers, etc. – I am not tempted by those things at all. I think different people are “built” differently.

I also think that there’s an inherent portion control switch different people have. For me, if you gave me a package of Oreos – a serving is a sleeve. For other people, they are able to take a cookie or two and then be satisfied and done. So for someone like me, the “diet advice” to “just take one cookie” is worthless – I’m better off just not starting at all. Other people can do that.

I have the same problem with cookies. They aren’t allowed in my house. Other sweet things don’t tempt me as much. We have ice cream left over from a July birthday no one has bothered to finish.

I am addicted to breads and pasta. Can’t even have them in the house. A cake or cookies would go stale before I would touch them. Not a big sweet eater!

I can resist most of the junk easily. However… the evil freezer filled with all you can eat “free” Haagen Dazs ice cream bars and gelato cups is a different story! Try to sit in the classroom with a bunch of ice cream munching folks! So far, I have been doing a good job at avoiding it for most part.

congrats, mommusic! Deborah, I think you will get there!
