Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Deborah- I love that story about the playground and “boring”. Geez- what did they expect? :)

64 degrees and much lower humidity this morning. Dark to start my run, but I didn’t take a light since in about 4 minutes I could see OK. Saw a bunny and a deer (and the usual cows). Went “over the pass” into my old neighborhood. It’s a lovely route. I don’t know why I’m so afraid of the big hill that I don’t make myself do it that often.

Best news is WildChild ran today and reported that his legs are good to go! Still has quads that are black and blue, but no soreness! I’m so relieved. I hope he does OK. It is a really hard course and will be over 100 degrees. He is using it as a tune up for Kona and not as an all out race.

BCEagle- WE MISS YOU. Pretty please come back to us!

I’m glad to hear WC is back to feeling good, MOWC. 100 degrees, though, ugh!

I’m trying to think if I’ve ever seen a cow out on one of my runs yet. Don’t think I have. That’s one to add to the list – run somewhere I can spot cows! Probably a better idea than bears or crocodiles.

The cows are within 1/4 mile of my house- I can see them from the house, actually. Sometimes when they really get going, we can hear them mooing. It’s pretty cool, really. I talk to them when I run by. H sees llamas on his bike rides. I love where I live.

I forgot to do my ValSlides last night. I’m worried about my own training this weekend in Vegas (not that I am at all the priority there…). I know I will wake up at 3am because of the time difference, so at least I can get out there around 5 and beat the sun. I will try to run longer on Saturday since I don’t think they have to be anywhere as early as on Sunday and WILL carry water.

Yes, stay hydrated!

Take a look at this:

[Woman’s Time-Lapse Weight Loss Video Goes Viral | ABC News](http://gma.yahoo.com/blogs/abc-blogs/womans-time-lapsed-weight-loss-video-goes-viral-135734803--abc-news-health.html?vp=1)

I think she looks several years younger, too! :)

I know this sounds silly, but I think my face looks better / prettier / whatever now that I’m actively exercising and breaking a real sweat several times a week.

Ditto here, Pizzagirl. Although someone say that people with more facial fat and rounded faces look younger than their peers as we age, I do not think my former chipmunk cheeks were too flattering. They were actually making me look several years older!

MOfWC, glad to hear that WC is feeling better. Good luck to him!

The time-lapse video is pretty cool - and very foresightful of her to have started taking the photos.

I think very thin people with little facial fat do tend to look older, but I also agree that most people with chubbier faces look older.

Does your school really feed you ice cream? Maybe I should try that with my 2 pm class! Actually our large lecture hall was just renovated this summer and the dean is on a mission to keep students from eating and drinking in it. That is not a rule I am going to enforce - I do like my students caffeinated, at least to a point.

Regarding the discussion about our food weaknesses- mine are all foods even food I do not like. I eat them all and in mass quantity.

I may have told this story earlier in this thread- my very thin wife came home from shopping once with a box of cookies. It was the kind I really did not like. I said why did you buy those. She said I had a craving for them. I said the package is not open.

3 days later the box was still not open. I ate the entire box. 2 or 3 days after that she asked me if I knew what happened to the cookies. I said I ate them. She said I thought you did not like them. I said liking them and eating them are not the same thing.

To prove I have some self control- I love ice cream but never eat it at home because it is one of the few foods my wife eats. She has a small bowl every night. If I was to eat the ice cream there would never be any left for her. So I never touch it.

Back to my workouts- great lifting day yesterday and a strong 3.25 miles today. Feeling real good and been fairly good on the food control front.

Fun to see that video.

Glad to hear Wildchild can run without pain. Good luck to you both out west!

I know I’m going to be out of commission for my regular workouts for the next few days, so I figured I’d bank a good although short one today. I ran for 15 minutes on the treadmill, and followed up with another drop-two-sizes strength workout (the one with the mountain climbers, ugh!). I don’t usually do two days in a row of this kind of exercise, but my body didn’t complain any more than it normally does. Off for a walk now.

4+ miles today. I’ve been having a hard time sleeping and work is the worst! Super pig out on food Monday and Tuesday both…stress induced. Pretty indiscriminate eating. Scale unaffected. Back on track today with a protein shake, grilled chicken breast, eggs with a piece of swiss and some edamame snack mix (in measured quantities). H is working a lot and I eat when I’m bored. Better plan something for the weekend or it could get ugly.

Good luck to WildChild and GF in Vegas. We expect a report, even though what happens in Vegas stays there (allegedly). Sorry, couldn’t resist.

And yes, BCE, please come back. We miss you!

Nice workout, CJane!

I consider it an accomplishment when I manage to move plates left on the smith machine bar over to one of the pegs…

Nice day of hiking. 2.5 hour drive up to Lincoln and across the Kancamagus Highway (a spectacular twisty 2-lane mountain road). Crisp 70 degree day, bright blue sky, with cool breezes. Super.

Short 4.5 mile round trip hike with about 1400 feet of elevation. I’ve come to the conclusion that all hikes in the White Mountains are rocky, rough, and steep. Some are just longer than others. This one had some fun stuff – like a stream crossing that required walking in the current on submerged rocks. Smooth angled rock slabs, much of it wet, that required careful step (no tumbles, yeah!)

Awesome views at the top where I enjoyed the sun and the breeze with an apple and some roasted almonds. About 4 hours for the hike, plus 2.5 hours home.

Sounds like a good day, iDad.

Got to make the most of the beautiful days! Way to go, iDad. :)

Yeah. But, I’d have to eat 3/4 pounds of fish 7 days a week to get enough vit D from food. The problem is that, at this latitude, you get pretty much zero vitamin D from sun exposure. For all intents and purposes, everyone in New England is big time Vit D deficient unless they supplement.

That video is awesome…why didn’t I think of that?! Damned! It might have been a good maintenance/behavior modifier for me!

Speaking of which, I suspect the “easy” vaca weight is now gone (3 lbs) but a more stubborn “you really gained this” 1.5 is left  I’ll keep you posted if I’m due for a cheater’s “second” five pound party! I suspect my imminent new am plan next week should kick things up a bit.

Idad, I don’t recall, but is the vitamin d test something I should/can ask for on my next physical/panel? I’m overdue and should book it soon. I take 5k daily now anyway under my own recognizance because it totally beat SAD for me :)

Back from vacation, and trying to get back to a regular running routine. My calf injury seems to be finally going away, but it’s put a real dent in my half training plan. It’s only 6 weeks away, and I now realize that I won’t be able to run the whole thing by then, so it’s time for plan B. I’m going to do the half as a run/walk and signed up for another half in March, so if the injury gods are kind to me, I should be able to run the whole thing.

I haven’t run in very many races in the past 5 years, but just registered for 2. The 3rd annual Andrew Lovedale 5k at Davidson college this Saturday, and the Susan G Komen race for the cure in Charlotte Oct 5 (I did run that one last year). I was just in Boston, and every time I visit I fantasize about running the Boston marathon. I am on record as stating I no longer have the stamina to run 26 miles, but I think I will do a “feasibility study” to see if I can go farther by slowing down. That was how I initially started to enjoy running in my late 20s. I hated running track because all I ever did was run until it hurt, then run some more until it hurt more, so running was literally a pain. When I slowed down I found I actually enjoyed running for long distances. Now, my definition of “slowing down” is a lot slower, since I already feel like I am going slow. :D

Also, read an interesting article in AARP about Bill Clinton - how he has gone totally Vegan for health reasons. Lost a lot of weight and expects heart benefits as well.
