I read about this, too. But the article I read said he eats eggs and salmon regularly. When you take a closer look at what he actually eats, it’s more paleo than vegan.

Turns out “it depends on what the meaning of ‘vegan’ is”… ;)

I strongly suspect that going high carb low fat vegan is a big mistake for coronary aretery disease patients that tend towards metabolic syndrome.

KMCMOM;

The Vitamin D test is the Vitamin D, 25 Hydroxy test. It’s one of the most common blood tests that is run and can be easily added to the same bloodwork order. You can walk in off the street and get it done for $59, looks like my Blue Cross price was $31.75 (although deciphering bills is like deciphering hieroglyphics).

If you are supplementing with 5000 IU a day, it’s unlikely that your levels are extremely low or high enough to be worried about toxicity. I just figured that doing the test once a few months after I started supplementing was worth it just to get a read on the dosage. Curiosity more than anything else. My doc had no problem adding it to my list when I told him I had started supplementing Vit D. He never asked how much I was taking or showed any interest.

Glad to hear the calf is coming around and getting better. Aches and pains put a real damper on exercise.

CJANE:

Looks like the WMI has pretty decent workouts. I have to laugh at him for stuff like “the American deadlift”. He’s such a tool, but his heart’s in the right place! :)

What a beautiful hike that was, iDad. Thanks for sharing.

I did a 45 minute walk early this morning. I didn’t feel at all sore from the two days of drop two sizes strength workouts. I think this exercise program is pretty good. Now I have a few days of rest after another dreaded oral surgery. blah. I’ll be working out vicariously through your posts.

I’m finally feeling better–ankle is healing (cellulitis almost gone–just a little redness). I’ve had to keep off my feet for almost 3.5 weeks and it’s been making me crazy. I’ve been feeling much better for the last few days, so I went on a short hike with D2. We did a 2.5 mile trail; it was loop to the highest point on the island where we have a vacation place–elevation was only 110 feet. So no mountains to climb, but great vegetation (lots of heathland–a rare habitat). Ankle felt fine, but I didn’t want to push it. There were lots of smaller trails to follow to ponds in the area, but we just went out and back.

Haven’t done any weight work for all this time either and figured I would start slowly. I was inspired by Idad’s link to the young woman doing 55 lb. DB bench presses. Can’t do that much weight, but I’m comfortable with 25 lb. So I started there–1 set of 12 DBs. Hoping to work up to more and continue to add slowly. It feels so good to be able to do something!! I hated being laid up.

I read that same article and I almost think Bill Clinton has gotten a little too thin.

Took burlesque and “polga” (pole for yoga) the other day. Loved the burlesque - the teacher has the right attitude esp for those of us with two left feet - but was disappointed in the other teacher and wrote a letter to the studio head. The yoga-ish part was fine, since I’ve been doing CorePower yoga, but then she announced things like “we’re going to spin on the pole” or “do handstands on the pole” or “do splits on the pole” and then just stood there and didn’t offer any assistance to those of us who had no pole experience (and the class didn’t require pole experience). Really? You want me to stand on my hands and put my feet on a pole for balance and you’re not going to stand right next to me with your arms ready to catch me so I don’t fall on the hardwood floor and crack my head open? I was so disappointed, as my other teacher in the same studio is great, and when we do headstands there, she spots for safety. To make it worse, this teacher had a note book that she referred to for her next moves and she said stupid things like “This move is really good for your reproductive organs” or “this gets rid of the toxins in your system” or all that other woo that I just hate and snicker at. No, it’s just a yoga move. It feels good and stretches you.

Yeah, I’m a long way from 55 lbs on that one. I might be a little more aggressive if I had a spotter, but I really, really, really don’t fancy the idea of dropping a dumbbell on my head…

I do the version where I keep the non-working arm outstretched with a DB while I do my reps with one arm. I think it probably lowers the max weight I can handle.

I bought a running skirt at a local running store that was having a 50% sale. Thank you, MOWC I will inaugurate it this Sunday at my first fall 5K. I am woefully undertrained for it since I’ve been kind of burnt out on running the last few weeks, but I am hoping that I’ve developed enough strength to see me through. Famous last words as they say! Luckily I’m not representing the US in the Olympics or anything!

Back to the basement. No rest day after hiking.

*TRX side plank and plank
Stability ball deadbug
Stability ball toe touches

med ball slam
box jumps

DB front squat
3 pt row

Single leg dead lift
TRX pushups with hold at bottom
*

Really good workout. Kicked the weight up on the front squats (2 x 35 lbs) and the 3-pt row (60 lbs) for the second and third sets again. This is working out well to do the first set a little lighter and then bump it up. The first set is always the tough one.

Easy day in the basement. Would normally be a rest day but was bored. Easy warm up, side planks, 2 sets of push ups, split leg squats combined with dumb bell front raises, burpees, stretch and finally some balance exercises.

Sounds like a winning formula, Tom! Good workout and food control for the win…

For some reason, I find that working out helps me on the food front. I’m not sure why…

I have found a new really simple recipe that is fantastic (if you aren’t afraid of saturated fat). When I learned to cook Thai food, it was a big production with homemade curry pastes and so forth. But, I’m learned to “cheat” a little. Now, I whip up a curry sauce with a couple of TBS of store-bought Thai red curry paste and about a third of a can of coconut milk. You can use it with just about everything, but tonight I sauteed a piece of salmon in one pan and some fresh asparagus in another. Then whipped up the curry sauce in the salmon pan, let it simmer for a few minutes. Yum. Yum. Yum. Thai Salmon and Asparagus Curry. About 10 minutes start to finish…

Hour of yoga, pulled into driveway just as S was leaving to take the dog on a walk. It was a gorgeous night so I joined him, and we walked for over an hour. His school is a late-start school (late September) and it’s nice having him home.

You have to stir/shake coconut milk up really well when you open the can. The solids settle to the bottom of the can and need to be mixed back in. I just open the can and transfer it to a tupperware to keep in the fridge, since I don’t need anywhere near a full can. You can also add some water if your “curry sauce” is too thick.

I’m kicking myself because I stopped using coconut milk because it’s so high in saturated fat. Now, I know that’s a needless health scare and it turns out coconut milk and coconut oil is really good for you.

The storebought curry pastes make it really easy. Just keep a jar in the fridge and spoon out what you need to taste. Red curry. Green curry. Yellow curry. Massaman curry. All varieties should be on the grocery shelves.

^Awesome idea. I may have to give that a whirl. I used to ake curry a lot but haven’t for a long time Nice hike too. Makes me wish I had da stuck around the Rock for another week and joined the girls on the Gros Morne hike. They survived, btw, with gorgeous shots of the earth’s mantle in one spot…and a lot of post-hike hot tubbing, as I’m given to understand But two-week vacas just aren’t viable it seems when in biz for oneself.

Broom, glad you’re feeling better. Good luck PG on the 5k and enjoy the skirt!
Tom, glad you’re plowing ahead on the workout/food control without setback.

I’m excited because the temps are alleged to spike here over the next few days, which means a last hurrah on aquajogging. There is also a rumor afoot my neighboring gf is actually going to go kayaking with me this weekend, but we shall see. Maybe I should just get over my fear of kayaking alone…it’s idiotic how few times I get out when you consider that I live on a river!

I never used to think twice about taking mcson out as a toddler In a canoe when I lived on a river before…granted, it was a much smaller river, and a canoe, not a kayak. But for all intents and purposes, I was “by myself.” But here, mch and everyone we know warns me against it. I’m going to have to ponder my continued compliance on this one. Because its starting to bug me.
