Food for Thought.

It has been one year since I decided to download the C25K app and set forth to complete it - at my own pace and to my own satisfaction. I did finish it - after some ankle issues (and a lesson in proper shoes
) and very occasionally, repeating a “day” of the program if I felt I just wasn’t happy with my performance. Yeah me!

My goal was to complete a 5K - to be able to say that I did it - and run the whole way. I have completed 4 officially and a few group runs (also 3 miles). Everything else in between are just my own monthly goals. Yeah me!!!

I had the encouragement of the people here. I had people to totally admire (like MOWC - whose feats I don’t think I WANT to accomplish!!) and people who were on the same road as me, but a little further ahead (Deborah
) - and everyone else who has posted here in some way(s) gave me food for thought at one time or another. Yeah YOU!!!

So over the past year, I kind of looked at myself as a running newlywed. A newbie, beginner, learner - whatever. That term gave me a little crutch - a reason to always keep trying and striving, but a little cushion of not having to always improve greatly or be a star athlete. Well, as far as I know, after a year, you’re not a newlywed anymore! You just ARE.

I may or may not get a little faster. I may or may not run a little farther. But the goal is to keep running, do races when I see one I like, keep goals for the month to keep things interesting, etc.

I saw this quote today (on the RunKeeper FB page) and I think I’ll adopt it from now on. Now that I’m not a newlywed anymore (sigh!):

“I often hear someone say I’m not a real runner. We are all runners, some just run faster than others. I never met a fake runner.” - Bart Yasso via Runner’s World

Not a newlywed. Not fake. Just a runner. :)

~ 4 mi park run

Congratulations on your 1 year running anniversary, Abasket. :)

Excellent post, abasket. Congratulations on your tremendous progress and attitude. Yes, we are all runners (well, those of us who run) and it doesn’t matter how slow or fast we are.

Great post, abasket.
I’ve been running for a couple of years now but still feel funny saying to other people that I run/am a runner. I’m always thinking they prob. don’t believe me. I’m 51 w/ silver streaks in my hair. I’m 5’6.5" and weigh 122. I will never be a toothpick with racehorse legs! Cottage cheese thighs will not go away no matter how many miles I run. I’m not super speedy. My avg. mile is in the mid 9’s.

I’ve never entered a race. I probably never will. Running helps to keep my clothes from getting too tight and my vital signs good. But mostly and still surprising to me…even though I sometimes have to push myself to run, it usually feels good once I get going and afterwards I’m always glad I did it. There’s sort of a weird sense of accomplishment from exercise that I don’t get from other things. Ran 3.5 in the dark(6:15 a.m.) this a.m. before work. Felt good.

Feeling good, though not as energetic as I’d like. Took a walk - about a mile.

Today’s exercise (er, physical activity) was a mile and a half walk to the Qdoba for dinner, then the mile & a half walk back, though by a different route to keep it interesting.

I also played with the hula hoop a bit. I can do it–but it’s hard work! :D

Wow. What a spectacular day. The weather is perfect. Sixty degrees. Not a cloud. Deep blue sky. Only downside is a low in the mid thirties tonight. Headed back to the tent after Thai dinner. Will be going for the Midwestern fleece.

Awesome short hike today. Mount Jackson tomorrow.

Great post, Abasket, and happy anniversary!

Idad, glad you had a glorious day. It’s been gorgeous here too.
Fall really can be one if my favorite seasons…I just hate seeing the pool ready to close
And dread fishing the leaves out if I MIS-time the close by trying to stretch the season. My son’s birthday is the 28th, so I keep it operational until then because if its sufficiently heated, he and his friends will swim no matter how cold…something to do with whiskey, it seems ;)

Wow, what an inspirational lady:

Quiet bunch here today.

Back in July I met one of my first running goals: to complete a 6.2 mile run. I actually ended up running a bit over 6.4. Did the same run today and did it 5 minutes faster. I was feeling a bit discouraged - I knew I could run further but didn’t think I was running any faster. Now I know that I am.

Beautiful weather here today. What’s everyone else been up to?

Love that, Bunsen! Amazing.

sabaray- good improvement in time! I know pizzagirl can make those same improvements!

I ran 3 1/2 miles this morning and am just feeling tired and drained (understandably). I’m glad to get out there, but not feeling very motivated. Have a business function after work, so that’s it for today.

sabaray, 5 min off your PR is nothing to sneeze at :)

I’m thinking about running on the crappy hotel treadmill. I need a little break from my computer. Just looking those papers full of little DNA sequences is driving me nuts!!! It serves as a good reminder why I did not become a molecular biologist even after taking all coursework required for the major. I just pretend to be one, although I’m not staying at a Holiday Inn. :D

Stretch/strength/core for me. It’s getting near cat’s dinner time, so I had company. ;)

Mount Jackson kicked my butt. Seven hours. Brutal trail the entire way. Then the last eighth mile was foot and hand rock scrambling. Views of Washington were spectacular. Cloudless blue sky. I reserve the right to bag tomorrow’s hike depending how I feel. Right now, I’m toast.

What’s the dinner plan, iDad?

Wow, idad! Yes, you earned the right to bag another hike. :)

Managed to run 4 miles before my butt got kicked off the treadmill by a guy who was waiting to get on it. Note to self: when packing Injinjis, always make sure you are not packing only the left foot socks!!! :)

LOL, Bunsen. That would be a problem.

iDad-Maybe a flatter hike/walk somewhere for tomorrow? Today sounds tough but gorgeous.

Beef short ribs and a huge salad. Restaurant has wifi for the kindle.

39 degrees inside the tent last night…

Yup, that could have been a problem if i had only packed one pair.
I have 3 pairs of Injinjis (came in a pack), and luckily I packed 2 pairs. Statistically, I would have ended up with at least one sock different from the others.
Phew. Washed them. Hopefully, they will be dry for my tomorrow’s run. I could have washed just the right sock…
