Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Non-expert here as well. After researching a bit and taking into account my own present/past fitness history (non-athletic!) the intensity/extremeness of Crossfit doesn’t seem like a healthy option IMO. I DO support cross-training - having more than one type of exercise in your repertoire/routine and/or core training.

One of my main goals with exercise because I am enjoying the exercise and the benefits (feeling better/looking better) is to avoid injury at all reasonable costs. It seems I hear/read about a lot of injury with Crossfit - correct me if I’m wrong.

I treat the two days before a race as rest days.

^^^ That too. :)

OK … I think I will try the one class (since I got a groupon for $29 that covers 10 classes – so if I don’t like it after 1 class, it’s not that big of a loss to scrap the whole thing). I will put my ego on hold and make sure I do NOT push myself beyond any comfort zone I have, and I will not be intimidated by any jocks in class!

I agree with you all re cross-training in general. My “repertoire” is (in no particular order) running, elliptical, tandem bike ride, yoga, pilates, strength training, swimming / deep water running, dance class and of course the perennial walking the dog. I’m really just trying to integrate movement in my life. I think it is amazing I haven’t weighed 200 pounds as I really have been sedentary most of my life. I still can’t believe it’s taken me to age 48 to actually like, enjoy even crave physical activity. It’s a real change for me.

I can’t imagine you being intimidated by anyone! As Deborah mentioned though it might be a bit much before the race even if the only goal is to finish. Just my two cents for what it’s worth- and yes, we expect a report!

How’s your knee pain by the way?

PG–I tried a Cross Fit class last year because I bought a groupon special too. The class was just too fast for me. I can do lots of squats and planks and don’t have any problems doing them. I’m also pretty strong, but I was working so hard to keep up in the Cross Fit class that I was just frustrated. I left feeling like an old lady because I couldn’t keep up–which is usually not how I feel when I’ve done a good workout. I agree with Idad’s assessment–lots and lots of reps isn’t always better.

Feeling pretty good after yesterday’s workout. Thought I’d be sore, but discomfort is minimal. Ankle was a bit swollen at the end of the day. I will definitely check out the compression sock website. The ones I have are definitely ugly.

Planning on a 3 mile walk this PM.

For you runners with hilly (gently rolling or otherwise - gently rolling sounds so soothing!!) terrain:

Those sound tough, abasket. I run hills so much I’m just glad to get up the damn things!

Speaking of Crossfit…(sad…!)

Totally off topic - we’ll pick up our new puppy the weekend of November 10th!

And I thought of iDad - just saw a video where someone has trained their dog to do yoga and burpees. Go to the very end if you’re interested.

Awww! Off topic - not really, you’ll be walking that puppy, right??! Tell us about new puppy!

Well, I have financially supported a Lab rescue for a number of years and finally applied to foster and adopt. We were rejected. They felt we lived too far from their service area and we also don’t have a fenced yard. So, I’ll keep sending my contributions but that didn’t solve the problem of a friend for Sabadog. I know quite a few breeders and just heard this am that we will be adding a black female Lab to the household. I’m pretty excited. We got Sabadog’s predecessor from these folks, and yep, I’ll be walking her too!

I appreciate the sentiment - but I have so many demons around being-picked-last-in-gym-class-before-the-fat-kids it’s not funny. I had to go to an office event involving bowling, and I can’t bowl to save my life, and I was almost in tears. No one else cares, but it seriously gives me flashbacks. Every week before I go to the burlesque class, I sit outside in my car thinking - I can’t do this, I have two left feet, who am I kidding – and then I tell myself to buck up and go inside. I guess we’ll see - if the Crossfit group is people who are chill, I’m fine, but if it’s a bunch of very-intense, competitive jocks, I am out of there. It’s hard to tell.

The knee is getting better - thanks for asking - I still feel discomfort when I put my body weight on it when kneeling, but it’s discomfort vs pain, so I think it means that the tincture of time is the only remedy here.

Pizzagirl, I have the same feelings. Always the last picked in gym, it’s a terrible feeling. I have only been to a few classes because of my feelings of inadequacy. So kudos to you for going.

D’s boyfriend is big into cross fit and belongs to a gym. He says the classes are guys who used to do other things but because of injury do cross fit and women who got a groupon deal lol!

I saw a flyer about couch to cross fit class, I wonder if this gym offers it and if that would be the way to go.

On my exercise front, I took a week off running but yesterday ran 3.2 miles pain free. Whoo hoo! D visited this weekend and it was H’s birthday, I ate so much it was criminal. Back on the wagon, I don’t think I have ate so badly in so long. I don’t even remember eating this bad on vacation. But had tons of fun.

5.75 hill-free treadmill miles (10:05 pace). I was in the zone. :)

Pizzagirl, FWIW, I was among the last kids to get picked in gym class when it came to ball games even though I was not the shortest! But I could run, do those dreaded 40 pushups in 1 minute, and climb to the top of the infamous rope like a monkey. I still dread any game that involves a ball. I can’t dance either and I’m so uncoordinated, it is a miracle I learned to walk! So I tend to concentrate on things I can do and gradually add things that I find uncomfortable. I really wish I had time for any organized classes.

Good to hear everyone’s injuries are healing. Fingers crossed!

Here is my bad news: I felt pretty bad in the past week, thought I had a bladder infection, went to see my doc, and she diagnosed me with IC and - to add insult to my injury! - she also told me to lay off all Vit C (including citrus), caffeine, vinegary things, and alcohol for a month. :frowning: What a fun treatment plan!

But… Here is my good news: I signed up for a race - yippee!!! Now the training begins - YAY!

BB- Boston??? What is IC? Hope you recover quickly.

A bunch of my friends missed out on getting into Boston by 2-15 seconds. They had the qualifying times, but the slots filled up with the runners who qualified with faster times.

Good run, Deborah.

Yes, you guessed that right, MOfWC, my Boston registration is confirmed, so it is time to plan for the race. Sad to hear about your friends - it sucks so much to qualify and not get in!

Apparently, interstitial cystitis (some kind of inflammatory process of non-bacterial origin) can have similar symptoms to bladder infection. Yuck. I am on a diet of eggs, yogurt and watermelons.

Best of luck, BB! Sorry about the interstitial cystitis.

yay Deborah! I’d kill to be at a 10 minute mile!
